As above, we have the choice of the 09 or the 10.

    The 09:
    100k miles
    1 owner
    3/4 service history.
    Medium spec.
    Costing us €9k
    2l D4D

    The 10:
    46k miles
1 owner (We actually know the woman who had it so it's legit).
    Full service history
    Strats model
    2l D4D.
    Costing us €13k.

(Prices based on a car to trade)

The car is for my mother in law and she wants an Avensis!

The big thing is the mileage; she does 60 miles round trip each day to work and on some days, she needs to go further.

I think, for the extra spec and mileage, the 10 is better value. What do 'in the know' reckon?

Even though it's cheaper the service history of the 09 would turn me off it.

Knowing the history of a car means a lot. It's a year newer, lower miles, decent spec so if you can bargain anything more off it I'd go with the 10 reg.

If you have the extra 4K go for the newer model with the FSH and lower miles but there are loads of avensis around the place make sure you are getting a good deal.

She does. It's the fact that we know the car and the FSH. I'll try and get a few pound more out of it tomorrow!
The price seems to be ok compared to others on dd etc, plus, the 12mths warranty, including all parts and labour.

The current model Avensis is very much a second-rate car compared to its rivals. It's also worse than its predecessor (03-08 model) in my opinion as well, and I travel regularly enough in both models. The older car has a nicer interior (the build quality is better) and it also rides better. The current model even on 16 inch wheels is quite harsh over bumps.

There are a couple of issues with the latest car as well, the most serious being the fact that there is a manufacturing fault with the doors, a crack can appear above the check strap which will strain the doors so much that they need to be replaced! Toyota should cover this if the car is only recently out of warranty though as long as it's got a full service history. There are also a few other build quality issues, but mechanically they're solid.

Click here for more information about the manufacturing fault with the doors.

As the others have suggested, I would also go for the newer car, not least because it's got a full service history - vital if the doors haven't been replaced yet!

Would an 08 avensis of the older model be a runner?

My take on it - is that if they've messed up the doors like that - id find it hard to trust the rest of the cars ability to hold up properly into bigger miles.

It might be fine - but by god its a completely mental fault isn't it

Personally id be expecting a relatively new car like this to be capable of doing over 200 k miles - and for me this issue would make me doubt the cars ability to do it.

Im sure it may will be fine (doors aside) - but it really doesn't inspire confidence imo

If finances allow, I would go for the 2010 model. You are getting a newer and higher spec car with much lower mileage on average per year and with a better SH although that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, it's nice to have.
