Spray to get rid of buzzes/rattles?

The dash on my Passat buzzes/rattles like a mad thing on certain types of road surface. Sounds like its behind the various fake wood trims, so I'm going to take them off and spray some sort of lubricant in there to shut the damn thing up.

Any suggestions what kind of lubricant/oil/silicone spray is best for this sort of thing?

I think I have the older model Passat then you... mine is the b5.5.

I have used silicone spray which was a small help.

Have to say that I am disappointed with the rattles in my Passat dash as well..... not the Germans best build quality....maybe they save the best for Audi or Skoda :-)

Still have rattles despite sprays and use of some felt in the side anchors of the dash.

Best of luck with sorting yours out - let us know how you get on.

I think padding as opposed to a spray is a better option. Much cleaner too.

I have two rattles in my car at the moment, one in the A pillar and one from the passenger door. There's a recall for both that I need to find time to get it in for but I used silicone on the door one and it only lasted a few days.

A recall for 2 rattles? What is it? Great service whoever it is!

I tried some felt padding, no joy, and know silicone can dry out, hence hoping there was a heavier, longer lasting lubricant.

It's not a loose rattle, more a high frequency buzzing of plastic on plastic set off by resonance on certain types of road.

You'd be amazed what you can do with a few used matchsticks and something long and pointy to push them into the various cracks and crevices. ;)

    Spray silicone grease?

    Try Maplins.

3M do rolls of adhesive padding in various thickness (From a less than a mm to a few mm) Might be worth trying first. Will certainly outlast any spray especially if you are removing the dash anyway.

New Passat had similar rattle/vibration from the Wooden style inlays. I left a piece of transparent silicone dry until hard and then pressed tiny pieces into the crevices with a credit card. Invisible and silent so was happy out.

It's a Leon - both rattles have had recall notices issued for them which I was astounded by given that VAGs usually do rattle a bit. To be honest if I get a few hours free time I might do it myself as I'm not overly trusting of the dealer to do it without damaging something else.

What about trying some silicone sealant? It's pliable enough to get into awkward spots but easy enough to remove too.

EDIT - silicone mentioned above already.

I like that silicone idea, will give it a try. Cheers.

Buy a better car than the rip off that is VAG. You won't need sprays and all sorts of other fixes then

    Spray is cheaper.

How does that help the OP at this time?

I've had various different makes of cars and most of them had rattles of some sort in the cabin.

You're right I'm sorry. I had some very costly experiences with VAG's, I'm still raging about and it's several years later.
