I have a 08 MK5 VW Golf Gti and I cannot seem to find the mpg reading on the onboard computer. Is this not standard with all the GTis?

    Thanks

Cheers. I checked mine there. It says 19l/100km.

    Whats that in mpg?

Just throw this 19l/100km to mpg into google. It will do the conversion.

    19 l/100km =
    12.3797149 Miles per gallon

Divide 282.48 by the l/100km to get mpg.

That would mean I would get around 250 km from a Tank ....

Any they say electric cars have range anxiety :D

Yeah I get around 250km - 300km per tank. This is all city driving

I had the car serviced 6 months ago by George Dalton so I don't think theres anything wrong with it. I have the DSG as well and in fairness I use sports mode a fair bit as well because I love the sound of it! Ill fill the tank and see exactly what I get out of a full tank.

Better get used to l/100 km since you're never going to see mpg on an Irish market car again (thankfully).

Does the car have the highline clocks? (Full height red display between the rev counter and speedo).
If so, you should be able to change it to Imperial (MPG) via the settings.

If thats a standard GTI something is seriously up

When I had my MKV I had around 9/10 l/100km average

Yeah that sounds very low Mpg for any Golf Gti. Have a 1.8t mk4 and if you rag it you'll still get about 25- 30 MPG.

19mpg on a regular basis sounds more like subaru wrx sti territory.

One of the reasons I like Golf Gti's is you can keep the revs down and save fuel if you need to. Where as a turbo charged Subaru will drink fuel no matter what you do!

That's pretty bad, might wanna get it checked over. I live in Dublin and would get 400 to a tank easily, and mine is the supposedly thirstier DSG.

I know people who consider pootling about lomgmile road, mass road and out to liffey valley outside of rush hour as city driving. If the OP is actually doing real city driving with low average speed there may well be nothing wrong.

Now that I think of it, all my driving is medium to long range. Very little to no 5-10 min trips.

On the short trips, the car's trip computer might not get past 20-25mpg. Think you may well have a valid point. Larger engines don't deal well with short range city driving in terms of your MPG.

My long term average was around 31mpg (9.1l/100km) (non-dsg). It reset recently and over the last while I've even averaging around 33mpg (8.5ish/100km). A lot of my driving is contained in a few long trips though with my average being increased by a few short trips.

It's a pain you can't easily switch it to mpg in the golf (like you can in a lot if cars), hate having to deal with l/100km as mpg makes much more sense to me and I'm constantly having to convert in my head to make sense of it. I've been considering getting it changed with vag-com as the option should be there somewhere for UK models.

When I had my manual Mk5 GTi I averaged around 23mpg but it was driven "enthusiastically" with limited motorway driving but I was always choosing when I wanted to stay in a lower gear and use higher revs. If you're revving the engine hard in sports mode a lot I can see how your's could be worse but it still sounds bad.

Yup, US Gallons. Here's a good converted for UK gallons.

    http://mpg.webix.co.uk/

    19L/100KM = 15MPG

In comparison, my Avensis 1.8 gets me:

    7.5L/100KM = 38MPG (half city / motorway)

Side question: Is the turbo boost adjustable on the GTI or is it factory set?

Something definitely doesn't seem right there, are you re-mapped, who done the map, was it done on a RR?
Next time you're in with George ask him about the MPG, maybe plug into a vagcom and read any faults for starters yourself, I'm not sure about the mk V but the MK IV has many common problems which affect MPG like coolant temp sensor, dirty or faulty MAF.
I'd have thought you should be getting 28-35mpg, even low 20's if you are ragging it!

Are you driving around with flat tires OP?

I know. I use (well used to use) mine around Dublin city centre. My commute went from Christchurch out over the quays and up to Blanchardstown during rush hour. Hard to find any worse stop start traffic in Dublin, and that kind of mpg would be unacceptable to me. As I said earlier, the only time I got worse than the OPs mpg was ragging it around Mondello so hard I boiled the brake fluid.

Never mind that its a shame to use a portion of a GTIs life for driving in heavy traffic around town :P

Actually my reading is 11l/100km and not 19l/100km!

I do proper city driving 5 days a week. 14 km each way

Ill check my tyres tonight. Im driving to Galway later so hopefully ill get a better reading!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭dangerousdavem

Just checked there an 11l/100km is 25mpg. I reckon thats about right because of city driving i do and the fact that I'm always putting the foot down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,563 ✭✭✭leeroybrown

That sounds normal. If you're using a heavy boot around town 25mpg is about what I'd expect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭matt70iu

    That sounds more like it!
