Windscreen damage on a new car

Driving down the M50 this morning a car overtook me while on the slow lane and propelled the biggest stone I've ever seen on a road. Obviously, nothing could be done as she did not place it there. Wondering, will the damage stay as it is, or will it spread and get bigger. It is a spider like defect which makes me believe it will spread fast. The windscreen is heated-if need to be replaced, will this be a problem?

Get that replaced as soon as. There's a crack there, and it will spread fairly quickly I'd say.

Shouldn't be an issue getting a heated screen replaced - usually in stock unless it's something very unusual (3 day order for a 5 Series with HUD is the longest we've had to wait that I can remember).

Hope you have windscreen coverage on your policy....

Yeah, best get it replaced. It will spread eventually.

Funnily enough, is there a large project going on somewhere? I've noticed a lot more dings and dangs from stones, some large, on the M50 in the past two or so weeks.

Just an additional question re the windscreen and windscreen cover, how does claiming for a windscreen affect your NCB when looking for a renewal next year? Would you have to state that you have had a claim?

I have no idea TBH. I think these stones usually get stuck in between tyres of big trucks...
Was driving really slowly on M50 coming from Beaumont Hospital (best if I had gone though town)-towards Dundrum and bang!

Thanks for that. Checkec with 123.ie (RSA) and I do have windscreen cover.

Nope, makes no difference to NCB. You don't even have to mention it.

It shouldn't make a difference, you do need to mention it unless specifically referred to on the claims declaration question

the windscreen is part of the structural integrity of the car. Safety alone means get it fixed. and it's an nct fail so you will still need to get it sorted anyway

Knowing that windscreen replacement cover is available I'd be tempted to get it repaired with resin just to see how good the resin repair actually is with a challenging chip. The kits can be bought on ebay for under 10 euro and it is only a 20 minute job on a sunny day. It isn't in line of sight. I assume it'll have to be replaced eventually.

Try the resin first, that chip is not line of sight. I've had 3 screens replaced over the years and every one of them had subsequent issues, trim not replaced properly, increased wind noise, etc. Maybe unlucky but changing screen would be a last resort from now on if resin is an option.

Went to check it during lunch break and it has now spread. Would say about 10 cm so contacted Autoglas.

No. It's a Skoda Superb L&K. 3 months old. The stone was big!

Bugger, stand over the job and make sure the fitter knows you are fussy and won't tolerate any wind noise issues!

While a windscreen replacement claim might not affect your NCB it will still be listed on your NCB letter at the end of the year issued by your insurance company. It's just listed as its a claim but has no bearing on your NCB with regards other insurance companies.

Why **** about when insurance will cover the cost of a replacement?

A home repair might also be an issue for a replacement claim.

If the crack is traveling then more than likely no windscreen replacement company will try to repair it. They will most likely recommend it is replaced.

I'd also be telling them you want it replaced with a genuine windscreen.

That's one of the few screens that might be an issue. Heated screens in Skoda's are fairly rare so possibly not in stock.

Have to say I never had a screen listed on a proof of bonus letter. I have had screens fitted for years on busses lorries and cars. May be a new thing now to stop fraud in some way. They will do anything now to avoid paying out.

Had the very same thing happen to me in 09 in a Superb Elegance, the car was a week old and again in Feb this year in an L&K,the car was 2 days old. Auto glass replaced them and did an excellent job. AAA did one in the interim and didn't.!

Had it listed on mine for the first time last year. As I said it had no bearing on my NCB or moving insurance companies though.

It doesn't affect your NCB but I have seen glass claims listed on NCB certificates and they certainly have to be disclosed as claims.

It gets listed alright. I had a windscreen replaced on a Transit in 2010 and last year when I was ringing around for quotes, an insurance company mentioned the windscreen claim. I was with Axa when I made the claim, but Axa were not the insurers who mentioned it. The girl said it made no difference to the quote, but then, it was still listed as a claim, so I don't really believe that to be true. Insurance companies are not charities after all. Everything is considered.

Spoke to Autoglass this PM and they offered to replace windscreen on Friday. I checked if the new glass was OEM or original sourced from dealer. Was ensure it was OEM and TBH, I agreed that they proceed. I was told that sourcing an original may take 5 working days. Soon after that I rang them to tell them that I was prepared to wait those few days but to have the peace of mind that the original windscreen would be fitted. They said they would check with my insurance and get back to me. Havent heard from them by EOB so hopefully they'll call tomorrow
