I need some advice on how to insulate my attic/bedroom, there is a bedroom in our attic space that we have just used for storage really but we would like to do it up properly into a bedroom,i recently took down some of the ceiling to see what if any insulation was up there, and low and behold there was none whatsoever, all there is is felt paper and then tile, no wonder its cold here in winter:D its an apex roof, so im gonna have to rip down the ceiling if you can call it that(sheets of chipboard) and insulate it, plasterboard it and plaster the ceiling properly, what i want to know is do i just get a few rolls of wool and fire that up then put plasterboard over it, would that be enough, i have no idea about insulation tbh but i want to do it myself cos money is tight

Would that hard foam kingspan stuff be better because i now realise you need a couple of inchs between the foam and the slate and i dont think i could do that with fibreglass

    Why not use plastic/poly baffles?

The best job of all is to take down what's there and replace it with Insulated plaster Board. Go with either 50mm Insulation + 12 mm Plasterboard attached or the same in 72 MM. You screw them up with 100mm Screws and Mushroom PVC Washers. I've just done a couple of Ceilings in the 72 Mill
and it's a great job. You can instantly feel the difference it's made to the Rooms.
It's expensive to do but cheaper than oil in the long run.

You would want to be sure that the space complies with building regs if using it as a bedroom - fire proof door, emergency exit etc.

Do you just screw them straight onto the joists ? Roughly how much per sheet

Yes you need to make sure the rafter are ok and heavy enough to take it 135 x 30 mm or heavier. You may have to put in some extra noggins especially along any Walls where there is no Rafter close to the side Walls. Some Builders put Rafters on top of the Wall in which case you need to stitch some battens to it. 3 x 2 will do fine.
Then draw a pencil line down from the centre of the Rafters onto the Wall so as you have your centres when you put the Boards up. Take a Photo also as it handy to have a picture of where they are.
Don't forget to put in Grounds also for where you want to put any light fittings. Kill the power before disconnecting any lights and check again with tester as lights can be wired funny some times.
Then when you're ready to put up the Boards use 4 inch Screws and Put a pvc Mushroom washer onto the Screw. There about 5 E for a pack of 100. I'll check the name of the screws and post it later. Don't use cheap screws.
When the boards are up use a roll of adhesive backed scrim all around the edge sticking to wall and ceiling.
Then get it skim coated by a plasterer. Job done.

Thanks for the reply sky, would you know how much a sheet of insulated plasterboard is?, would it be cheaper for me to just put up say 50-60mm insulated plasterboard directly on the joists or put up 50mm insulation board between the rafters and then cover with 12mm plasterboard, thanks again for the reply

Unless you have a height restriction I'd definitely go with the Insulated Boards. If you care to pm me with your location I can tell you where I got mine.
