So myself & hubby are heading off next week on our delayed three week honeymoon to Thailand.

Its years since I done a long flight so any tips on what to pack/bring etc? We booked with KLM but flying Dublin-Amsterdam with Aer Lingus and then with KLM to Bangkok. I know our bags will go direct but do we have to go back through security or is there a connections route we go? If we buy dutyfree alcohol in Bangkok on the way back will we get through Amsterdam with it as it'll be over 100ml?

Do we check in at a KLM or Aer Lingus desk in Dublin? Searched KLM website for these answer but couldnt locate them.

Thanks in advance, any tips appreciated :D

KLM don't operate in Dublin, Aer Lingus can check you in.

There's security at each gate in Amsterdam so you'll have to go through it again there.

Wear loose clothing, have a cardigan with you and have valuables, any medicine and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag just in case your bags go missing.

Not sure of the story with duty-free but you could just buy in a normal shop over there and put it into your suitcase so you don't have to worry.

    Enjoy the holiday.

Loose clothing, extra layers - pashmina or similar, thick pair of socks (feet get cold on those flights). Eye mask/ear plugs if you want to sleep. Handcream to combat the long-haul dry hand syndrome and toothbrush and toothpaste to freshen up before you land. Enjoy!

Pretty sure you won't get duty free through Amsterdam because of the security on each gate. They won't accept a sealed plastic bag from Bangkok either IIRC but that might have changed recently. Alcohol isn't particularly good value duty free in Bangkok anyway.

You'll get a blanket, flight socks, toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste on the flight. Also earplugs and eye mask if it's an overnight flight.

Thankfully Schipol's a doddle to transit OP.

As it's a single terminal, there's no tortuous flight connections akin to Heathrow or CDG -you simply follow signs to your gate & as said above, undergo security screening there also. You'll disembark Aer Lingus at pier D & it can then be a bit of a schlep to get to your gate, but it's well signed & there's never a problem locating a KLM member of staff if needs be.

Travel light, there's very little that won't be available in Thailand at much cheaper prices. If you're going to bring booze back buy it in the numerous 7/11 stores and put it in your baggage. Long haul is easy enough going with personal entertainment in every seat, you may want to bring some sleeping pills if you struggle sleeping in economy.

Bangkok airport is huge and immigration cant take some time so if the first immigration area you go to is very busy just keep walking there's another one right beside it that leads to the same baggage area.

Are you connecting or staying in Bangkok for a while?

Thanks everyone. We are staying for 2 days before heading north.

Any chance we'll be able to catch the Dublin Donegal match at an Irish bar there?

Interesting priority for your honeymoon :D

I've never set foot in an Irish bar in Thailand but there's a bar called The Game on Sukhumvit in Bangkok that shows pretty much every sport. I've seen GAA showing there. It's between Soi 9 and 11 and it's right at Nana BTS station.

There's a decent Irish bar food wise in Sukhumvit Soi 4 called Hanrahan's and they do show a lot of sports, Irish bars in Thailand aren't really like Irish bars elsewhere, don't expect any Irish people working there, be careful if you're walking back from there late as to get back to the Skytrain you'll have to walk by Nana entertainment plaza which is a red light area attracting a lot of on street prostitution, usually they'll leave you alone but ladyboy pickpockets are fairly notorious in the area.
