Is it possible to pay on ebay without using Paypal ?

I just bought a laptop there, £185 which converts to €230 at today's rates. Paypal total charge was €11.50 bringing it up to €241.50.

€11.50 represents almost 5% of the purchase price. I don't mind paying for a service but Paypal are taking the piss IMO. They're probably shafting you on the exchange rate which is where they make a lot of money, wouldn't people just be better off (at least in terms of fees) to pay direct with their credit card ?

Contact the seller to see if they will accept other forms of payment.

Deal is done now, I want it by Friday so I'll suck up Paypals rip just this once. But it puts me off buying from ebay, you don't get this crap with Amazon.

In saying that you don't get bargain £185 laptops on Amazon either

Anyway I just see Paypal as an unnecessary layer to skim more profits. If Amazon and other major etailers can operate fine without them then why even use them on ebay? If the goods don't arrive then surely you can reverse the CC transaction in any case. I just don't get what we *get* for paying Paypal 4% or 5% on top of the purchase price. Fair enough they are convenient but it just seems like money for nothing to me.

In case you don't know, Paypal is owned by Ebay. You can work out the reason that Ebay try to force users to use Paypal for yourself :)

why not pay paypal in sterling and let your credit card convert it into euro? Its usually cheaper. And what specifically was the 11.50 charge for? Paypal only charges fees to the seller not to the buyer.

I suspect the extra 11.50 was paypals conversion rate.

the xe.com rate is a mid-market rate. You will never get this rate from your bank or anywhere else. paypals rate of 1.77 matches the BOI sell rate for sterling so it looks correct.

I always laugh when people get in a strop over stuff not being charged using the exact rate on xe.com
