What kind of gear is being used in these photos?

    Hi Guys,

I'm a regular reader of sidetracked magazine, and particularly enjoyed the photos on the following article:

I was wondering what you think they're using in terms of kit? The photos appear to all have a similar style as if some sort of filter is applied. I quite like it and would like to give it a go.

    What do ye think?

Maybe shoot them an email and ask? Looks like they are togs who do shoots on their travels, there is a shot of their gear on their site but I can't make it out.

The first picture I saw was of a beach, the next up a snowy mountain. I doubt there's any particular piece of kit that's synchronising a familiar look across a range of scenery like that other than the photographers eye and brain.

Will do. I guess theres probably a good bit of post processing going on but I have to say I like the style of their stuff!

I see vignetting applied, so I'd assume post-processing is being done. Perhaps they are using a film effect filter that you can get for PS (such as Nik Color Efex Pro). I also think they are lifting the shadows in a number of them.

Some lovely shots here. In my opinion, you could achieve these shots with any mid-high range DSLR with some good lenses, good in camera technique, and good PP skills..

If I had to guess, I'd say that they were using a FF frame camera with 3 maybe 4 lenses (wide angle, mid range, longer focal length). The blog says they use primes. However, it could easily be a crop sensor with different focal lengths that equate to the same FOV.

PP wise - it looks pretty naturally processed - would guess the lot was done in Lightroom or some variant. Pretty standard use of radial / gradient filters, vignettes, and HSL...Would be surprised if there was any heavy amount of photoshopping done.

As with most styles of photography, it's less about the gear really. There's nice composition here, great use of natural light (all mostly sunset / sunrise) and nice (and fairly consistent) post processing.

Just saw this post and checked the website.

Fairly confident that's a Nikon D800 there in the shot alongside a go-pro and what i think is a polaroid camera. The lens on the D800 is a prime - can't make out what it is as it's not familiar to me. it's not one of the new G type Nikkor primes - suspect it's either an older nikon prime, or potentially it's a third party lens..looks like a 50mm..

It's all down to processing I reckon..

The sun flare one is great and I def think a fair bit of PP used too.
