I am really interested in the career of public relations(completed my leaving cert this year) and I wonder if someone could fill me in on the job prospects/pay in Ireland? Any other information such as what you like about working in pr would be welcome too. Thanks :)

Its apparently very difficult to get into as its a highly sought after career, as there are only a couple of agencies in Dublin. A friend of mine works for one and had to do internships after her degree to prove herself. She works in the events management/product launch side of the business. She finds it rewarding but very stressful and youre also dealing with difficult and demanding clients all the time. It doesnt appear as glamourous as PR is made out and there is a lot of long hours, evening work involved. There is another side to it that involves writing press releases and creating stories about celebrities that would require a journalistic background.

I think London would have better opportunities in this area.

I worked in Public Relations for 5/6 years and I have been out of work for a year now - it is a tough business but can be extremely interesting. I have retrained and I am now interning as a Digital Marketing Executive. If you are really interested then maybe do a general marketing degree with a strong emphasis on digital and then do a masters in PR/Communications. Another way is to study Journalism and then do a PR diploma/masters afterwards.

Also tweet, tumblr, pin, blog do all of these things so you have a digital footprint to show to potential employers.
