Moving from Mac to PC

I've used Mac laptops for 12 years now. My current one is about to die and financially getting a new mac isn't a goer, so moving to a PC.

Buying a Mac was straight forward given the limited choice, so would appreciate any advice, cause my head is fried with the amount of options.

I use my laptop for writing (a lot of writing), some light video editing on Adobe Premiere and general surfing. I'm not a gamer. Also, ideally I'd like something without a CD/DVD drive - the slimmer and more lightweight the better.

As far as budget goes, ideally I want to stay under €650-600.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

If you're looking for laptop to run Adobe Premiere then I think this might be challenging.
Take a look on this one: http://www.adverts.ie/laptops/lenovo-x240-practically-new/5922195
It's X series Thinkpad. Lightweight & ultra portable, but I'm not sure about Adobe Premiere.
In my opinion you would need more ram and ssd drive, but still it would cost less than €650.
I usually recommend Thinkpads as I'm using such laptops for over 10 years, mainly W series (workstations) and X series during traveling. You can install Linux if you'd like to have similar look and feel like OSX.
If you're looking for something more powerful then maybe it's worth to take into consideration higher models with i7 cpu on board as they might suits you better for video post-processing.

    Looks overpriced to me.
Also a 12.5" screen? Might not be much use for Adobe Premiere.

In my humble opinion you have to decide whether you're looking for something "slimmer and more lightweight" or mobile workstation.
12.5" is great for text processing. You need better screen - you should get docking station and as good external screen as you can get / afford.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I probably accept that having an optical drive will be a must if I want to keep my options open.

I bought my current Mac in 2008, and as far as video editing goes, it worked a treat. Rendering was a ball ache time wise but the actual editing itself was lag free, etc. Also, I usually hooked my mac up to an external monitor anyway.

Pie in the sky question but pound for pound, how would a €600 PC laptop compare with a 6 year old macbook?

I can't answer that as I'm not Mac user, however I was looking for a laptop for visualization, photo editing and general use. My approach is this - I need something reliable, well built. So I took into consideration following: Dell Precision Mxxxx, Thinkpad W520/W530 (not W540 just because i don't like new design), HP Zbook 14 or Zbook 15. If I would be looking for something for video editing then I would go for i7 cpu with SSD on board and at least 16GB RAM.
Price for each model above starts from circa €1000.
It's hard nut to crack, but in the same time I think that if you get something decent then you won't have to replace it in next 6 years or so.
