    Hi folks,

friend just bought an ENG reg 2.2 civic diesel.

    1. Will they issue you with a southern reg on the day the payment is made ?

    2. Where the hell would she be able to source a space saver spare wheel ?

    Cheers in advance :-)

Recently got a space saver wheel on ebay (brand new) from a place in Northern Ireland. Worked out a lot cheaper than anywhere in the Republic.

Yeah you will get you allocated plate there and then. They will make it for you for an additional 30 euro, feckin rip off. You wont receive your book until you tax the car and then its sent to you in the post.

Go to a scrapyard to see if they have space savers.

Be careful with sizing as well.
There are two sizes available for those civics, and those who fit 1.4 and 1.8 petrol models, might not necesserily fit diesel model.
Diesel models (from certain year) have some metal protectors around rear brake discs, which makes it impossible to fit smaller wheel.
One you need is T135/80D16. This will surely fit.
Smaller one (I think T115/90D15 - I'm not sure) won't fit diesel model with those metal covers around rear brake discs.

    Thanks folks,

just another Q. The car in question was purchased on ENG plates (private sale). Do the VRT require a receipt of sale ? Also, they make reference to a pre-inspection within 7 days of import. Does this mean that you have to make 2 trips to the VRT office ?

VRT inspection has to be booked within 7 days of the car entering the country, this is carried out by the NCT centre.

Separately if the car is 4 years or older it will require a NCT, once VRT inspection/payment and number plates are organized. You can book the NCT as normal as they will not issue a NCT test at the same time as a VRT inspection.

Cheers Bazz, do they require any form of receipt of purchase ( in case of a private sale, just a squiggle and a price on a piece of paper )? Or is this not a requirement ?

Thats not expensive for Honda imo. Your friend should factor it into the overall price of the car. Sometimes we have to pay for quality.

Your friend is buying a premium brand and one of the consequences of that is that parts are expensive. I just bought a Bosch Induction hob at a very reduced price. However I fully accept that spare parts are expensive but that is the price you pay for premium brands.

Ring a few dealers and see what the price is...not commonly found 2nd hand as they are an option or an aftermarket part...very few people opt to get the space saver and rely on the can of foam...so not much of a market for them 2nd hand.

Apparently a space saver from a DC5 will fit.

yes, but a handwritten one will suffice

...and make sure the 'seller' dated the receipt.

Did your friend actually bring the car in herself ? If not make her aware that they might (just might) look for a Ferry ticket or similar to prove she actually brought the car into the State herself, rather than buying it from a private individual....which although illegal is rarely an issue as you are giving them money :)

micksgarage.ie probably the best value for Plates (if you don't mind their logo on the bottom).

Cheers mb, it was brought in by another party, to sell on I guess, and she has now purchased so I'll tell her to make sure she presents a receipt. Thanks again.

Also Be sure to check for Rust on the Roof,

Currently talking with Honda Ireland but Honda UK seem to be faster at solving this issue.

Best solution to avoid this problem is to buy model with glass roof ;)

Even apart from this, the glass roof is a must-have. It transforms the car IMO.

Yep, its a glass roof alright. Red body. Jesus, its a lovely bus. Very responsive and tight. Absolutely love the display, particularly that HUD speedo. Very nice touch indeed. Only issue I could see was the tyre pressure warning display which takes over the dash. Easily knocked off though. ( And the absence of a space-saver )

Oh, just one more thing. The fuel cap ( the chrome effect jobbie ) looks a bit tarnished. Replacement easily sought ?

Cox Motor Parts online will sort that out for you. And I think there's a fitting guide on civinfo.com, which has all the resources you'd need for a Civic. Spotted a couple of Civic owners from here over there, self included :-)
