You would need to open ports in your broadband router at home ( the one your Sat box is connected to )
I did this on my alien 2 and I have a vodafone router
from a pc at home go to www.whatismyip.com
and take a note of your external IP address
change the default streaming port on your sat box
Change the default root password on the sat box
assign a fixed IP address to the sat box
    Go to port forward.com
look up your router and follow the guide to open ports
download the portforward checker to a pc on your network @ home
disconnect your sat box network cable to test
give your pc the same IP address your sat box had
    run the port forward checker
    if the ports are open
disconnect your pc and reconnect your sat box
    reassign dhcp on your pc
go to your old mans house and on the top line of your browser where it says www.boards.ie/
type the external address you took a note of earlier
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8888 (where 8888 put the streaming port number you changed it to on the sat box )

Bear in mind the eircom netopia router I had would not forward ports at all even though it was all setup
the vodafone on had no trouble at all
and also streaming a hd channell from your box to outside requires a very good upload speed

thanks very much for your reply, alot of detail there, first off its nice to know it can be done, but networking is not my strongest area, ive done some reading on forwarding ports but i tried it recently and i had to reset my router because i knocked it off, im using a lynksys a4500 which has a nice interface for changing things but i cant seem to do it right!!

Although your router is not listed it does say that linksys is a user friendly one to set up and that most linksys can be covered by this guide
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/SlingBox.htm
    may be worth a look
