    The voice of saturday nights in the pre Sky days has passed away;

    Sports report on BBC Radio 2, and later Radio 5/5 Live at 5 pm on saturday nights. Memories of my youth growing up in Manchester.

    What a distinctive voice, would always be listening to him in car leaving the ground.

    RIP

    Yep; the radio always used to be tuned in to Sports report when we'd be coming back on the coach from a (usually fruitless) trip to an away game.

    His delivery was so smooth and authoritative, never hurried or distracted. RIP.

    A golden age of sports coverage on the radio. Peter Jones and/or Bryon Butler doing the main commentary game. Then JAG reading out the ''full classified check'' and Dad checking his pools coupon before slinging it in the bin. Those were the days.

    Used listen to him on the BBC World Service while working abroad. Distinctive voice and you often knew who won by his upward/downward inflection with the second team.

    East Fife 4 Forfar 5. :)

    RIP old boy!

    (Such a shame you're not around to see Scottish independence).

    He really was the voice of football for decades.

    There is something a bit sad about the fact that his death will pass with little fanfare, whereas fellows on social media go into paroxysms over something as inane as Jim White on transfer day.

    I'll always remember tuning in to get the results on one particular Saturday when Arsenal won 1-0 against Man Utd at Highbury. Bergkamp was the scorer. Christ on a bike I was delighted.
