Firstly if in wrong place - please move!
My daughter accepted a PLC course for a year and is happy to do it
Today in the CAO she was offered a place in an IT for four years doing a similar type course.
She would like to defer the college for a year and complete the PLC which starts in September - can she do this and will she be eligible to take up her college place next year providing she still wants to without being penalized with extra fees and expense?

    Yes she can. (I'm a PLC Co-ordinator).

She can accept her college course today and then write to the college to tell them she wants to defer her college place. It's common enough. Tell them that she feels she's too young so she's going to take the year out etc.

She can do the PLC for the year and next year she reapplied to the CAO and puts the course that she has deferred as her first and only choice. If she writes any other course on the form, her deferral is lost and she's back in the system with everyone else.

Something else that might be useful to you is that the college grant is available to PLC students, she can apply for that through susi.ie in the same way as she would apply for the third level grant.

She will still be eligible for the grant for her degree and her fees will also be unaffected by PLC.

There is a statutory payment of €200 to do a PLC. That was brought in in the budget about 2 years ago. If your daughter is a medical card holder, or receives the grant, this fee is waived. The centre she does the course in may have an additional fee themselves - for books, photocopying etc. This is not covered by the medical card.

If your daughter changes her mind about the college course next year she can just apply to the CAO as normal with her points from this year, and also her PLC points as a separate set of points.
