Basically I work for a company that I really like and they have offered me a promotion , I know the job I'm promoted to sucks and it's hardly any more money. I've been with the company 2.5 years and very happy. The one thing I hate is you can get your hours cut to 25 hours per week as contract states, and it does happen from time to time. But mainly I get 30/35 hours per week .

Anyway I was head hunted a few weeks ago from another company and went for interviews and got job, same money per hour , 40 hours per week contracted , no 40 min drive into work , I could walk into work now .

I have to give my decision tomorrow , I'm married with 2 kids and have another on way. It's such a hard decision. My heart would love to stay where I am but everything els says you got to go and pull yourself together you big baboon .

If you like where you are i'd stay. Do up a list of pro's and cons. Why do you think you should move ? From what you described apart from the commute there isn't much between them..

The new company is stable, profitable?

Do you know anyone working there who can tell you if it's a nice place or toxic?

Can you turn down the promotion and stay in your current job?

Would the promotion make a difference to your prospects in a year or two, or is it simply not a route you want to go down? If it's the latter, then I don't think that loving the company could make up for that.

The benefits of the other company would sound appealing to me - more guaranteed hours, which are offset by not having to commute for 5+ hours a week. So effectively, you're away from the house for roughly the same amount of time, but getting paid for more of it.

I think the previous 2 replies above mine are definitely important to find out.

I did up a list of pro,s and cons and new job won on nearly every aspect , the new place is established and I'd know a good few who work there, other than the usual gripes it seems ok . They have a lot of people working there with well over 10years under their belt .

I think my main problem is I get on so well with everybody I work with and enjoy the work but I've had a few barren months where I've taken home 300/400 less in my pay packet and I've really struggled . The company are constantly taking on people and a lot don't work out but if they managed to fill all the job vacancies I think I'd end up on around 30 hours per week or just less which scares the life out of me.

If I got promoted I can't go any higher down the road because I know I'm not up to the job really and the stress isn't my cup of tea .

If I stay in the role I'm in now I'll just get less hours .

But this is the important thing for me, I know for a lot of managers in this company that have left over the years and they've taken them back , I've had a great relationship with everybody there and believe if I asked for my job back down the road they would take me back. Or I could go to another branch and they would take me .

I told company this morning I would take job but I need to give my current employer 3 weeks which they agreed . I hope this will be enough for my current employer . I then told them I would come in on days off in the next 3 weeks for training as the person I'm replacing is leaving at end of month.

I need to focus over next 3 weeks in working hard so I can leave on good terms. I don't want to let new job distract me from my current job.

Best of luck with the new job; it sounds like the right choice. It also sounds like you're being more than reasonable with regards to finishing up in your current place.

I meant to reply to this earlier as I was in a similar situation a few years ago.

I think you've made the right call on the promotion, the extra money won't compensate for the crapness.

The choice the comes down to taking the job with the guaranteed 40 hours with a shorter commute or staying in the job with only 25 hours guaranteed and a longer commute. As you have kids I think this is a no brainer.

Very best of luck and great attitude. You're being more than fair to your present employer by easing the transition by offering to train your replacement.

If you have 2 kids and another on the way, I reckon you need the monetary stability of the new job. Also, losing the 40min commute and walking to your new job would also give you more time with the kids... I'd go with the new job.

Just a update, I gave my employer 3 weeks notice and worked the new job on days off to get training , because I get weekends off I offered them sat and Sunday aswell on week after I had finished and they kindly refused it because they said they had cover.

I had meeting with my area manager day before I finished and he thanked me and told me the door would be open if I ever wanted to come back for which I was delighted .

It's now back to solid hard work training up for new job, do other people hate starting new jobs, I know I do, I feel so stupid and clumsy .

Everybody I know tell me I made right desision in taking new job ,but when you have a job and a young family and mortgage it's such a risk .

First off, congrats on the new job OP. From what you described I think you've made the best choice myself.

I was in a job years back where I loved the environment, the people I worked with, the craic and social element etc.. but I think this held me back too as when the place was restructured I held on because of those reasons rather than looking for somewhere else like I probably should have and when I did finally move I really missed that side of it (also because there was zero atmosphere in the new place and extreme micromanagement).

These days, like yourself, it's not just me I have to think about so my desire to be happy and fulfilled (while still important and still there) is tempered by the bottom line and how it fits into my responsibilities.

As for starting in a new role, yea it's not much fun initially as you try to get familiar with everything (I'm terrible with names for example unless I deal with people regularly yet because of my role everyone knows me!) but things do settle down after a few weeks and you build a routine/friendships etc.

In any case, hope it works out for you but like I said, I think you made the right move anyway :)

Im in the new job a few weeks and have had a few brain melts. Its bit embarrassing esp if your in any way a perfectionist. Actually though I'm 99% happy as I still don't have to "know" anything !
