If you are in the republic get a Saorview one (non Saorview should not be sold there anyway). If you are in NI get a Freeview HD one.

You can check out the saorview website for TVs that are approved. These are guaranteed to work.

Many shops sell unapproved sets that may or may not work with Saorview or will partly work. As already mentioned buy a Saorview approved set to be sure or a Freeview HD set not plain Freeview as it may not work.

Yes ...... but some are sold as monitors and not TVs for Irish use.

Freeview HD set will likely not have some of the functions that Saorview approved sets will ...... teletext ..... proper EPG ... and maybe others ....

You are best advised to get a Saorview approved set .... and if Argos does not have one to suit, there are other outlets which do ;)

If they sell you a TV that doesn't work with Saorview then it isn't fit for purpose in my opinion. In that case bring it back for a refund.

I'd seriously doubt there are any new TVs for sale at this stage that 'don't work' with Saorview. Seems to take a while for the latest models to appear on the approved list, though.

Not everyone needs a saorview TV, so I wouldn't quite call it 'not fit for the purpose'

Some TV's state on the box whether it is Saorview ready or not, some require a bit of research.
If you buy one that says in the listing, say in an Argos catalogue, that it has saorview, but turns out it does not, then you are entitled to a refund.
If it doesn't state Saorview, in the catalogue or on the box, then no entitlement to a refund IMO.

If you find a model you're interested in that doesn't state if it has Saorview, post it here.
It wouldn't take long for some users, myself included, to have a look online and find out.

What do you mean 'has Saorview'? You won't find a new TV for sale in all of Europe that won't 'work' with Saorview i.e. produce picture & sound.

Saorview approval is another matter though, a guarantee that when you choose Ireland as country when setting up the TV, it will always work 100% with all aspects of the Saorview service.

Personally, with most makes of TV, I'd place very little premium on Saorview approval & would buy away quite confidently nomatter.

Sorry should have stated better alright.
    I meant saorview approved.

There have been several cases of non Saorview capable sets sold in the republic having to be replaced as not fit for purpose, even some several years old. Not stating Saorview is not good enough. If it is sold in Ireland and not Saorview capable it needs to state that fact.

Rubbish. There are plenty of TVs still being sold in the UK without MPEG4 decoders.

The OP does want Saorview so it is very much valid in this case.
