    Just an FYI,

The Animal Guard database is useless. Highly unlikely if your dog is lost or stolen that you'll get him back through an Animal Guard chip, because they are not members of Europetnet. You would have to also register the chip with one of the bigger Irish companies like FIDO or Animark, and this costs €15. So not much of a saving compared with getting it done by the vet.

September is National Chipping Month so a lot of vets will be doing promotions on chipping.

Also bears saying that legally, only vets and the vet nurses in their practice are allowed to microchip.

    your wrong their.
Due to new legislation with the IKC you can now implant your own pets. Forms from IKC for the registration of a litter do not need to be signed by a veterinary practice, they need only barcode stickers attached please see IKC website for more info by clicking the link below.

But it remains the fact that only vets can do the chipping. It's considered an act of veterinary surgery so falls under the Veterinary Practice Act of 2005.

It's irrelevant in legal terms that the IKC registration forms no longer need to be signed by a vet. The chipping itself still has to be done by a vet or vet nurse I'm afraid.

Actually it looks like you're right - me bad!

Just looked at the Act again:

A person shall not carry out an operation or procedure to which Regulation
3 refers, except under hygienic conditions and unless he or she is—
    (a) a registered veterinary practitioner acting as such,
    (b) a veterinary nurse, or
    (c) another person who is competent to carry out the procedure and—
    (i) is the owner or person in actual possession of the animal or his or
her employee acting under the direction of the owner or person
in actual possession of the animal, and
(ii) the procedure is part of, or incidental to, the normal husbandry
    and management of the animal.
