    Hi All,

I am currently looking at changing my car. By way of background I have a 90km round trip per day, with regular long trips around the country - on average do 25k miles per year. I have owned two Mondeo's in the past (1997 and 2005), and I currently have a 1.6CRDI Kia Cee'd. The Cee'd is a grand car, have had it for over 2 years but while its still got a decent bit of warranty left on it. I have a lack of love for the car though.

I have done some internet warrior research into a number of cars, namely the Insignia, I40, Optima, Mondeo and Octavia. From the research the Mondeo and Octavia seem to come out as the top contenders. I havent test drove any as of yet, planning on doing it in the next 2 weeks. Any advice, recommendations etc would be most appreciated. Looking for a diesel - cruise control and bluetooth a necessity, decent enough power, and good spec. Max budget would be €30k.

    Thanks in Advance.

The Octavia is a class below a Mondeo. It won't be as comfy but €30k would get a 2 litre 150 diesel with some extras. I have the 184 version of that engine and it's incredibly light on diesel for an engine of it's type.

I reckon if you wanted a Mondeo you'd get a decent one for well below budget if you were prepared to buy the last of the old model.

Have a look at the Mazda 6, forthcoming Passat and Superb too.

many thanks. what do you mean by "the last of the old model". I know there's a new model coming out in 2015,I'm not sure if that is what you are referring to.

the concern I have with the Mondeo is the 1.6 engine in terms of power! the 2ltr doesn't have the same performance of the equivalent Octavia engine.

also, I was of the opinion there was a lot of problems with diesel Mazda's....could have been the last version 6. I think the superb is that bit too big, or certainly looks it.

Current Mondeo 2.0 TDCi is available in 140bhp and 163bhp but the current model is being replaced by an all new car in 2015. Octavia is a similar competitor in size to the Ceed you have at the moment and there is a long waiting list for the vRS diesel. What about the Seat Leon FR, same car underneath as the Octavia vRS.

Hadnt even considered a Seat. Not sure how my insurance would be affected, but worth checking out anyway. Put a configuration together this morning and the price came in within budget anyway with all the spec i could want.

The FR comes with either the 150PS or the 184PS engine. The 184 offers more than just extra grunt (adjustable driving modes, proper rear suspension) and the total tax and insurance for me was the same as my old 1.5 petrol Almera.

There is reasonable space in the back, a deep enough boot but it's not as big as the Octavia's.

I got one recently and the only options I wanted was the Titanium pack and the Alcantra/Leather interior. The 18" wheels do not kill the ride quality really. The Alcantra/Leather is worth it and it doesn't shout "performance" like the VRS and the Golf GTD. The LED headlights take a bit of getting used to.

If the size of the Leon is enough then it's a good buy. Have an FR 184 myself too and find it hard to fault. There's an estate version available if you need more space too. It's not quite as big inside as the Octavia but to be it feels better built and nicer to drive imo.

The FR is also available in estate if you need the extra space. Have only seen 150hp ones available, don't know if there's even a 184 in the country.

There is a 184 sitting outside my front door.

No, sorry a hatchback (even though revenue had it as an estate)

Same as mine actually, insurance weren't bothered so I didn't change it.
