Is it possible to find out all your previous jobs. Can i apply to revenue or the tax office for previous history?

If you register for PAYEE Online you can view your work history on there.

I always wonder can employers doing background checks look up an potential hire's employment history this way? By checking when you were paying tax? No idea if that would be legal or not. Well, I'm guessing that it's not legal unless you give consent which would probably be implied by you consenting to the background check. Anyone know?

    Nope.

They're pretty much limited to what's on your P45 ... i.e. who your most recent employer was in that particular year, and how much you had been paid while in that employment.

This can be bypassed by submitting your P45 directly to Revenue and having them send on your tax credits and cut-offs to your new employer - however this does look a little bit dodgy, the new employer might wonder what you have to hide ... (then again, depending on the size of the company, payroll may have nothing to do with the hiring managers.)

As far as I know there is no way (legal or not) that an employer could look up an employee's history through Revenue.

    Thanks for the info. :)

In general, I wonder how far those third party background are permitted to go and where they get their info. It's all a bit veiled in secrecy.

They are actually quite restricted here unlike the UK.

They can check what you put on your form, but they can't check criminal history (in the UK they can)

Yeah, and I noticed (and know from working over there) that many UK employers explicitly state that they'll do a CRB check on you, it's much more common over there.
