    No it doesn't mean you'll be left with a butcher, just that some are oversubscribed so won't take on new patients.

    Erm, its exactly the same with NHS doctors and dentists. Actually far more common in the UK than here. Its the UK where you can end up getting assigned to a random butcher, particularly dentistry.

    Pretty much every "oh, how Irish..." style statement is wildly inaccurate and based on poor knowledge on the part of the person claiming it.

    If you're a medical card holder then there may be limits to the number of patients a doctor will accept. Can't see a problem if you are going to be paying for each consultation.

    Still happens, my own GP hasn't taken on any new private patients, bar children and new partners of existing patients since about 1992 - has been trying, and failing quite badly it seems, to wind down the surgery patient base since then.
