    Recommendations please!

So a friend and I usually meet up for a few hours for a few drinks and some PC gaming (two machines in the same room) on the weekend. Our old favourite has been old school Dawn of War, which is great for randomised 1 v 1s, which has probably given the longevity that it has had. But we're getting bored of it.

What we have tried as well recently:
    - We played through Magicka together, that was fun.
    - We tried Shogun 2 but the pace of play was far too slow to really work.
    - Total Annihilation: I love this game but he never played it back in the day and couldn't get past the retro look. I'm still bitter about this because the game play is so amazing but whatevs (we're going to give Planetary Annihilation a go once it is finished).

I've also considered the Portal 2 co-op, but he's not played the main game yet so that should happen first.

We like pretty much any type of game except sports games and MMOs, any recommendations other than that would be awesome. Co-op, vs, online, local, whatever, as long as it works for two friends in the same room. Was thinking about Titanfall possibly?

Battlefield is great for two working together. Get in a tank and have your buddy be gunner, working together you can dominate the map. Loads of fun!

Attack chopper and gunner would work as well, I tend not to last very long as a pilot though. And it can be difficult to get, as theres only one per side and everyone wants to fly it.

    So yeah, try Battlefield.

Nidhogg and Towerfall Ascension are both fantastic games for some playful two player duelling. They both have quickly accessible but ultimately deep mechanics that can make an hour or two disappear before you know it :)

    Trine & Trine 2?

Trine was recently ported to the new Trine 2 engine so you can play both now.

  • Divinity: Original Sin.

    Saints Row 3 or 4.
Starcraft 2 (the Arcade is completely free to play around with).
    Quake.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is an excellent kart racer. More skill-based than Mario Kart especially with the lack of a blue shell equivalent. Playable with KB+M or controller and definitely fun with friends.

Blur is another good mario kart style game, but with real cars. Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 & Borderlands 2 are great coop fps games. Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour, Age of Empires 2 & 3 are great fun if you like RTS games.

Don't let that put you off. My friend had never played it either and he picked it up pretty quickly. The coop introduces concepts slowly and doesn't spoil the single player game. Great fun.

Battlefield online is fantastic craic when you've got a friend with you.

Left4Dead 2 is another great choice.

If you like Dawn of War then Company of Heroes/COH2 is an obvious choice.

Sniper Elite Nazi Zombie Army is really good fun.

OpenRA is a really good way to play C&C, Red Alert and Dune 2000 multiplayer and they're still great fun.

Resident Evil 5 is good. I thought 6 was still fun in co-op as well.

I've had some good fun with co-op in Orcs Must Die 2. It's a silly, silly game but that makes it work better for co-op. :)

I'd +1 Monaco. Great craic especially over beers.

If you can somehow snag a working online PS2 emulator play Half Life: Decay (Then tell me how to get that working :P )
Dayz is great craic when you team up.

Age of Empires 2: HD edition is classic. (prepare to be absolutely destroyed by others if you play 2v2 online though) The game itself is rather expensive off steam for what is essentially the same 15 year old game + HD textures so certain key sites offer the game (apparently legitimately) for a fraction of the cost. http://www.kinguin.net/ I've used loads and never had an issue.

Alternatively just download the 15 year old copy (Its been 15 years you can't legit get it anywhere afaik) and the online matchmaking is handled through 3rd party Software. www.voobly.com I've found to have the largest community (larger than steam on the HD edition).

Insurgency is a great source engine FPS Tac shooter if you're into that sorta thing and we started playing a free-to-play game recently Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Phantoms, which is insanely good craic for a free-to-play. It's a 3rd Person Semi-Futuristic Cover based shooter.

EDIT: OH OH OH. How Could I forget, arguably, the best Multiplayer game EVER.

Check out Supreme Commander - it's like TA reborn. There's a sequel too but I never got into it myself.
