Seems to me that aside the odd keen young newbie, hobby beekeeping isn't the kind of pastime where you buy expensive kit when you can DIY.

So, what handy things do you use in beekeeping that you got fort free or for dirt cheap?

Here's a few to start you off:
    1. Tension straps from the pound shop - have used them for moving bees for some for years & not been let down
    2. Election posters for all sorts of uses - varroa inserts, small squares to block vents in crown boards when necessary, and even emergency hive roofs
    3. Margarine tubs from my old work canteen - for mixing & carrying sugar solution, for honey storage, and with holes drilled in the bottom, for draining cappings

When some manufacturer produces sheets of dense polystyrene, it will be possible to make even more savings!
