Removing appearance of scratches

Bought an 02 Black Renault Clio, couple of small scratches but none serious, Around the usual conspicuous areas like the rear edge of the door and that. White showing through on one or two but no rust that I can see. You have to look closely to see it.

I was thinking of washing the car and then using this on it:

    http://www.halfords.ie/motoring/cleaning-products/polish-wax/turtle-wax-color-magic-plus-black-500ml#tab3

Does anyone have any experience with it? I'd be concerned that if I use the chip stick it'll run off in the first heavy rain :P

Not looking to spend a huge amount, buying the car, insuring it and tax due next month (plus 4 new part worn tyres needed) = I'm broke :o

So the other option I was looking at was:

1 giving the car a good washing (do I really need specialist shampoo?)

    2. Using some of this stuff on the scratches: G3 Scratch Remover Paste

    3. Polishing with Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine Car Polish

    4. Finishing with Meguiars Ultimate Quik Wax

Do you guys reckon I could skip on the scratch remover and buy a decent shampoo? (Well, better than washing up liquid)

As I said, I'm broke and halfords have a 3 for 2 on so looking for best value I can get

Are the scratch marks where it had to be whipped to go up hills? :P

I would guess from the description of the kind of damage that it is too bad to be fixed with polishing. Post up some pictures of the damage and people will be better able to advise you on how best to tackle it :)

Is the bad look, that you are trying to fix, scuffs on the edge of the doors as a result of being banged off walls?

If you are looking for a cheap and cheerful option to take the bad look away; get a small pot of paint mixed up in your local motor factors. A very fine artists paint brush and a bit of patience, layering the paint, will be a permanent fix. All those other options will result in having to do it again after a few weeks.

    Thanks,

yeah it's a bit of that and a few horizontal scratches, I'm guessing from people scraping up against it with buttons or something. Nothing major, from a few paces away you wouldn't see it. I'm just a neat freak :p Going to give it a proper wash tomorrow (took advice from on here and got a mitt and microfibre cloths) and will give it a polish and waxing after and that should make it fairly clear what needs more attention. Might post up pictures after I get done if that's okay?

Do car places do colour matching?

The horizontal scratches on the panels, I wouldnt go at with a paint brush.
A hand polish will probably do wonders for it, as the fillers in the polish will help hide the defects; you'll get a few months out of it before needing to do it again. You would need it to be machine polished if you wanted a permanent fix.

There's a product called "Cover Up" by a company called 50Cal Detailing that might interest you! Does a great job at reviving the paintwork, but again, its only a temporary fix. Gives the paintwork a really wet look too; it need wax to be applied on top to make sure it lasts a few weeks.
