Insurance quotes and other question

Hey. I am wondering if it is ok to use reg numbers from cars you are looking at buying but don't yet own to get an online insurance quote before deciding on a purchase? Is that all legal and above board. I need to have vague insurance quotes to know which car I can afford to insure. Also, I had been looking at only diesel cars but right now am wondering if petrol would be a better idea. I shouldn't be putting that many km on the clock every year, maybe 15,000km a year at a guess. What would be an acceptable number of km on the clock of a petrol car if I was buying for somewhere between 3-4k. If any one can answer a any of these questions I would really appreciate it guys. Thanks very much in advance.

There is no harm in using reg numbers from cars for sale on the web. Insurance companies only have access to a database of the various makes and models via the number plate, they don't however have access to personal data from the current or previous owner of those cars however.

Mileage is dependant on the year of the car, the average annual mileage for a petrol car would be about 12k miles per year so it would be normal to find a 10 year old car with 120k miles on it. Ultimately though mileage is not the end all and be all of a car's condition. There are plenty of buckets of ****e out there with very little mileage on them and hardly any servicing done to them whereas there are cars with higher mileage that got regular servicing and maintenance.
