    Hi!

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I think it is. Sorry if it's not!

I have finished the Leaving Cert and I have a really big possibility of being offered my first choice. The problem is I never expected to be offered it because I didn't think I would get the points. I LOVE the college it's in but I'm not mad about the course. Would it be a bad decision to do a course just because I really like the college?

The course wouldn't be terrible but it's not exactly something I would love to do. I have wanted to go to this college for so long and I'm really confused as to what I should do.

    Any replies greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Do you have an idea of what you DO want to pursue?? Because if you do, then do what you love, first and foremost. There are already too many people in the world who have found themselves in a career they are less than enthusiastic about, and wish they could go back 40 years and do it all over again.

It would be the stupidest thing you ever did if you did a course you are not keen on just because of the college its in.

Would you prefer your 2nd or 3rd choice? I forget how it works now but could you go for them instead? I agree with other posters. Go for the course you want not the college.

If you're offered your first choice, you cannot pick another choice. You have to take the highest choice available, if you want to take any.

If you truly don't want to do the course, you'd be mad to do it just because you like the college.

Figure out what you want to do, perhaps do a relevant PLC this year, and a part time job, then apply for it next year on the CAO.

In my opinion you would be insane to do a course you're not interested in just because of the college. To tell the truth I'm a little gobsmacked that someone would let their choice of college for a few short years override the sort of job they want to get at the end of it all. Once you leave college and start working, those years start to fade into distant memory. College is just a phase of your life though it is one which can have a lasting effect on your life. Think very carefully about the sort of job you want to have when you graduate and let that guide you. Not the college itself.

    Hi OP here!

Thanks for all the replies! Ye're all right!

The College I love was on my level 7 list and the course I love is on my level 8 list.
I've decided I'm going to take the course I love over the college.

    Thanks again :D

I would do a plc course this year do one with typing, computers ect. Good typing and computer skills are useful to have. This will give you a few months to read up on the courses you could apply for next year. I would also advise you to attend as many college open days as possible and ask questions about the courses you are interested in.

I know people who did course they did not research fully or ended up doing course's other people said they should do.
Within a few months they were doing a course they hated/found hard and ended up failing there exams.

Another thing you need to consider is if you do this course and drop out because you find you don't like it or decide next year to apply for something else you will have to pay the full cost of the first year fees. Also if you are entitled to a grant you may not get the grant if this happens.

One of my friends did the leaving a number of years ago. They were unsure of what course to do in college. They got better leaving results than they expected but decided to do a plc course before going to college. Along with this they got some part time work and learned to drive.
During this year they looked into a number of college courses, attended opening days ect.
This person went to college a year after the other people they did the leaving cert with. They now have a phd and a very good job.

I would agree with the other posts here that if you like the course you doing you will do better in it long term.
