Saw these jellyfish along Dun Laoghaire pier today and was wondering what type they were? :)

Just heard on the radio that Sandycove beach has been closed down because of infestation as they called it of lions mane ( severe pain ) and Portuguese man of war ( sting often results in death ) .

    Jaysus, sounds dodge.

Any particular reason for an abundance of these jellyfish ?

I found an independent news article on the issue in North Dublin.

I am not a fan of ocean swimming at the best of times but now!

Southerly winds recently, the float acts as a sail. There are a few sightings nearly every year, usually towards the end of August when the sea temperatures are highest. They are a warm water species and cannot survive for long in our waters. (Portuguese man of war)
