p45 and financial year confusion

I finished with my previous employer in September 2013. I am starting a new job soon and they asked for my p45. I don't have one. Even if I did give my p45 to them, is it any use to them because last september isn't in this financial year?

It's of no use to them.

Source: I used to do payroll.

What do I say to them if they ask again?

You haven't worked this year so you've no P45...

Ring the revenue, with your PPS number and your employers details and they will issue you a new tax credits cert and send a copy to your employer

If you haven't worked since last September, you should also speak to Revenue about getting a P21 statement for last year, which may show an entitlement to have tax refunded to you.

It's tricky, because it's obvious the payroll person doesn't understand what they're doing if they insist on a P45.

The easiest way to deal with this is to ring Revenue, explain your situation, get your tax details over the phone, and give them to the payroll person saying Revenue confirmed this is all you need.

Point the payroll person here: www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/forms/p46.pdf
