UCD Science Points!!

Okay, so basically I got 505 in this years leaving. Obviously I was delighted with the result because it was basically exactly what I was aiming for. Last years points in Science for UCD was 505 so I was happy that I was in with a shot of getting the course, but I've slowly started to realize that there is a big demand for science courses and the points will most likely rise which is incredibly unfair in my opinion.
I was just wondering what you guys think will happen and will they rise. if so by how much?
UCD aren't great for dropping the points in the second round but I'll be praying for a miracle. The course began at around 300 so how much higher can they actually go?
Will I have a chance with the second round offers?
    Thanks for the help!

How is it unfair that points rise? Points could fall too.

We won't know until Monday what way the points will go. First preference for Science in UCD is up 23% this year. There was the same increase last year on the year previous. Does this mean the points will go up another 5 or 10? No. The answer is nobody knows until Monday :)

I just finished Science in UCD this year. Points were 435 when I started :pac:

Sorry, doesn't really help you much OP, but best of luck.

Going from 300 to 385 in a year isn't exactly the best thing to hear. Overall in the past few years the points have be rising significantly and I feel it puts a huge disadvantage at the students who believe they will get the course only to be shot down when they realise they didn't because the Uni had a lot more applicants than before and decided to put them up.

I know we'll have to wait until Monday but I have a feeling they may rise again this year.

I wish I was back 4 years ago. Or even last year because I have those points...

Unfortunately that's the way the points system works. The cut off point will be the points of the person who gets the last place on the course. So if more people got higher points and they applied for Science, the points would go up. There's really no way to know what'll happen though.

It's safe to say I'm pretty terrified. What about second round offers if anyone has any info? I know last year they didn't drop them but the year before maybe? I'm guaranteed UCD anyway but I really want this course.

Out of curiosity, what is it you mean by your last sentence? Is it that if you don't get Science in UCD, you'll do a different course in UCD? I find this kinda confusing. If it's Science you want to do, wouldn't the course that you're doing be more important than the University you do it in? So why not do Science in another University instead of some non-Science course in UCD?

Yeah it is confusing. I have several science and biology based courses for UCD down but my points aren't high enough based on last years results for most so I'm hoping this one will be okay. If all goes badly I have arts in UCD.

If I end up with arts I will most likely transfer at the end of first year to a institute where my points were high enough for the science courses. Like NUIM or NUIG. Just UCD was my first preference to go to.

I also had nowhere to live anywhere else.

Lots of the different Biology-related Science degree specialisations in UCC, NUIG and UCD are all fairly similar. All do Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, for example (I think). There are some slight differences in that UCD has Genetics and the others don't, and NUIG has Anatomy, etc. I'm not too sure on the other Biology-related ones though, like Zoology, Botany and Environmental Science.

NUIM is different in the subjects it offers degrees in (they're a bit broader I think) but they're all also good.

I have an interest in microbiology and I definitely considered every university available to me. I had to cut out NUIG because I was too late to apply to campus and it's too far of a journey for me to make (I live in Wicklow). UCC was a no no and Trinity's points were a bit to high compared to UCD. I'm left with NUIM and UCD. It was a hard decision to make but UCD was my preference. Just had to make some tough choices. I wouldn't mind transferring as I have two friends planing to go to NUIM.

Got 510 myself so hoping there isn't a major jump in points. Getting slightly worried that i'm only 5 clear on last year's.

It's not unfair of the college if points rise. They literally have no control over it, you seem to think they increase them, but that's not how it works. It just depends on the applicants - and more applicants means more people who might have high points, but not necessarily.

So, a 20% increase in applicants doesn't necessarily mean a 20% increase in points. But you can't be sure of anything until the CAO offers come out, and there's not long now, so good luck! :)

Hard luck. Will you get anything rechecked? Sure, you never know.
What did you offered in the end?

    UCC has Genetics

Good good. Heightens my point that Dublin, Cork & Galway are very similar in subject choice.
