    Hi

I am new to the investment game aside from the basic prize bonds i have never really invested in shares/stocks and i am looking at starting off small making minor invests

The thing is i literally don't know where to start , i have searched the internet and local stock brokers and they all want a sign on fee for creating an account in some cases over 500e

Any help would be greatly appreciated if someone could send me a link to where i can get started to simply buy stock in companies, oil etc or advice would be great

    Thanks

Why not post publicly so all other members can benefit from your broker wisdom?

I have an eBook detailing the ins and outs of buying stocks however it is linked to my website so I don't want to post it here as I think that might be against Boards rules (correct me if I am wrong).

Anyhow in my experience the best low cost phone broker is Redmayne Bentley in Cork. The guys are very knowledgable and trustworthy. I've know them for well over a decade.

There is no annual management fee for your account as long as you trade once every two or three years.

Although internet services are cheaper they may not be better for beginner investors in my mind as they are a pure transactional service only.

Most phone brokers have both an execution-only and advisory service however even with the execution-only service at Redmayne you can ask the guys about your trade or their opinion on things.

If you do go with Redmayne make sure it is the Cork branch you deal through as they have the lowest commision rates from the Irish branches.

Just to point out that I am not affiliated with Redmayne in any way.

Personally I also use TD Waterhouse for their online service and find it decent enough. But like I said online trading should really be for those who know what they are doing.

there awful in almost every sense but they are dirt cheap

if you own any sterling denominated stocks with them , you will always appear to be in the red regardless of how well the companies are doing

After losing €1,400 on falkland oil and gas, I'll be slow to invest in an oil company again!!!

There's a huge difference between established oil companies such as the majors and exploration companies without any production so I wouldn't discount investing in any oil company. You must know the basics of investing though.

My personal tactic when it comes to investing in exploration type companies is to wait for a market correction and buy any exploration company, as part of a basket, that is selling at a substantial discount to cash (without too much debt).

You can really clean up that way. Of course most people don't have the patience for that kind of investing. They think that you should be invested all the time.

    Just my 2c.
