Old address on drivers licence

When I got my licence, the address that I got on it was my rented accommodation at the time.

Having moved since and my renewal coming up in next few months, wondering do they send renewal to the address you used at the time?

Or do they liaise with the Dept of Shannon to get your current details etc?

Your insurance company will send the renewal to what address they have on file. If you've moved, you should let your insurance company know asap

    Ok, thanks for that.

But I'm talking about my drivers licence renewal?

As far as I know you will not get any reminder about your licence renewal. It is up to you to renew it at the rigth time. It is also an offence if your current adress is not on your licence.

I don't think you get a renewal notice for your driving licence. I never got one in any case. However, I moved twice since my license was renewed previously but I still have contact with the original address. I never had an issue with the wrong address on the licence even though it was handed into Gardai stn on a couple of occassions as I didn't have it on me when stopped.

If it's an offence, how do you get it changed? And is there any point with only a few months to go?

Reason I ask is the other half got a renewal notice in the post.

Since when? Like the OP mine has the address I lived at at the time but I haven't been updating it as I've moved around since then.

If you rent in Dublin at the minute that could be every year or two!

    That's exactly why I'm asking.

I rented a few places since my licence was issued, does that mean I'd have to get it changed each time

Actually, I don't think that is true unless they have changed the law in the last couple of years. I checked a couple of years ago, and while it was recommended that you keep the address updated, it was not obligatory (at least at the time)

Sorry... update to my previous post it is advised but not compulsory

"While you are required to carry your driving licence or learner permit with you at all times when driving, you are not required by law to change your licence or permit if you change your name or address. However, it is advisable.
When driving, you are required to show evidence of your licence or permit if requested to by An Garda Síochána, so your licence or permit should contain up-to-date information."

Its probably an offense to make up an address to put on your license. My license has my parents address on it, and will do for as long as I am renting.

He was bloody lucky - I was blithely driving around for 3 weeks without a license as I never got a renewal notice (a few years ago). It would have been a lot longer. The only reason I remembered was because we happened to be having a conversation about passing your driving test and I said it was "around this time of year", and then realised it was a multiple of 10 years earlier. Took the license out of my handbag, and presto - expired!
