Releasing your own music

I'm planning on releasing a single in the next few months (A-side and 3 remixes). But to be honest, I haven't got a clue where to start. I've got the usual thing of a few demo's on soundcloud, etc. But for a proper release, I don't really know the steps involved.

I reckon I'd be looking at the likes of soundcloud, iTunes, cdbaby, spotify, youtube, hype machine, etc.
Then there's trying to promote it through blogs, social media etc.

Has anybody any experience, tips, or links to resources on self-releasing music?

^^Have you used this? Prices look pretty good, would love to hear some first hand experience.

    I've used Tunecore. It's decent.
What I did find though is that some stores parse the information differently, so there may be mistakes in song titles etc. initially, but these can be changed.
Also, for more advanced monitoring for specific stores etc, you'll have to request logins as they aren't set up automatically.
Other than that though, no real issues. It's worth the price if you want as many distros as possible.

How long does it take to get the music available on iTunes etc?

Sorry man, totally forgot to check this thread!

It's different for all the stores as they have different procedures. iTunes took a few days for me. T'was a bit of a nightmare as I had to get them to amend the formatting (only on iTunes and Rdio though) and that took nearly a week, iirc.
Tunecore were excellent help though, so kudos to them.

Full details on timeframes here though - https://help.tunecore.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/21

Cheers man! I ended up just going ahead with it cos it was only a single so the €8 was a no brainer. Did it about 6 o'clock on Friday evening and the song went live on iTunes last night around 11pm. Not bad!

i've been using tunecore since about 2008. it's grand. gets the material available digitally. You still have to sell the stuff all the same.
