Hi. Heading to Belguim next week just for a Ryanair day trip - flying in and out of Charleroi airport. I've already visited Brussels on previous visits, so this time I'm thinking of going to visit either Mons or Namur. Both seem about the same distance and price by train from Charleroi airport. So just deciding which of those two to go to - would anyone recommend one or the other. I'm looking for which would be the nicest to have a walk / stroll around and take some pictures. Possibly getting some picnic food for lunch.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Mons is European Capital of Culture 2015, so there are a lot of things going on. If you are interested in WW1, they have a related tour on Sat and Sun (brilliant in my opinion) and exhibitions at the moment.
The Grand Place is in walking distance from the station (which is a building site at the moment, waiting to get the Calatrava treatment), people are nice and restaurants are not expensive and good.
Never been to Namur but heard about the Citadel there of course.

I, personally prefer Namur as it has the river and the citadel, and is a bit more important of a city. However check on the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles site to see if there is anything interesting going on on any of the other days.

How far would you be willing to travel? If you're fine with spending more time on a train there are some *lovely* places in Flanders. My favourite city in all of Belgium would have to be Antwerp. Ghent and Brugges are also lovely but have more of a small, tourist based city feel to them. Antwerp feels like being in a different country to Walloon cities. Everyone cycles, and when the weather shines it's beautiful.

If you're under time constraints I understand but either way Belgian trains are excellent and it's flat fare for anywhere in the country. It's a small place as well so don't worry about sticking around Hainaut/Namur provinces, you can go further afield!
