for financial reasons we left car renewal skip a few days, so had filled form taxing from date due and went into tax office to be penalized by €39.

did anyone know that after 7 days you are penalized regardless

yeah i was fairly sure that if there is any time the vehicle was untaxed for you would have to pay arrears for that month

just found out its 10% ,but taxing during month from date of expiry is not arrears imo.
what happens if post goes skewy, its date received it goes by .RIP OFF REPUBLIC at its meanest in time of recession while bankers are bailed out .

Just don't let tax slip in the future and you should be ok.

Just went into tax office today (in Cork) to pay tax on my car which was due 1st August. Was not charged any penalty.

So if the tax expires 31st July, are you penalized for paying it in August?
    Or Sept?

i'm sure it says on the form that the tax can be paid during the month following expiration. for that i would read that you can roll up and pay it any time during the following month no hassle.

you aren't penalised at all, just paying for the month you didn't tax it, at a rate of 10% of the annual rate, plus the normal tax for the months following . You can pay for the current month at any time in that month*, after that it becomes arrears.

*not a grace period, you can still be booked for non display

correct and 10% penalty is what the clark said is amount if over 7 days lte payment , havent spoken to her about it yet, i always warned her about possibility of penalty of not having valid disc but i know lodged cheques wern't cleared for some reason and taxing car would just have exceeded overdraft which i have at €1500 having written cheque for amount that was not yet cashed.anyways lesson learn't

Jaysus its no wonder the country is fecked etc etc.
what has you paying arrears on your cheap tax got to do with bankers?

Its not a penalty as such. I would reckon you got 13 months tax.

Your "penalty" (ie the extra you paid compared to the fraction of the annual rate) is actually €6.50

Doesn't sound like a penalty so much as it sounds like they're charging you for the time that it hadn't been paid.

Exactly , you have to tax it from when the last disc ran out. What date was on the old disc and whats on the new one.

If you just paid for 12 months from when you pay it , no one would tax their car till a month or two after the disc runs out because youd get a couple of months free.

Always use the on line service to order car tax, normally about 2 weeks late into month
never had a problem with arrears charge.

your spot on , nothing like an intelligent subscriber, i never lookked at disc and wife didn't either just stuck it up and started miawooooow ing so i asked and told her look at and sure enough its got an extra month's tax, thanks for giving me a restful night s sleep, very peaceful here now :D:):):):):)

bankers, developers etc didn't have to pay anything they were subsidized and given pay rises to fix what was essentially bad management on their behalf imo , these money saving penalties are essentially to get funds to keep country running.

BTW i was not looking for free tax period i had tax required date starting from expiry date of old disc, does not justify surcharge imo, but could incur penalty for no tax disc ,
