Blank screen after Windows 7 updates

Last night a load of Windows updates downloaded automatically. This morning I started up the laptop and after logging in I just got a blank screen, the cursor and a dialog box saying "Setting up personal settings for Windows desktop update"

I did a forced shutdown and started up again in safe mode and did a system restore to before the updates installed and it's ok again. Already turned off automatic updates but I probably need these updates... so what should I do? How do i know which one caused the problem?

    Any advice appreciated! :)

maybe download them one at a time.sounds like a graphics card driver they sometimes take a little longer to install.im sure the update manager would not download anything it does not need unless you changed hardware. ive had the same issue when two drivers downloaded the same time but one had to be installed before the other

Thanks... I downloaded all the essential security updates and ignored the rest and it was ok afterwards! I will download the others one at a time when the reminders get really annoying!

Same happened me, if you leave it alone for a little while it will come back on.

Disable your anti virus scanner and re-run the updates manually. It's a good idea to do the updates. Glitches can occur, but once system restore is enabled Windows can roll back if the inbuilt anti failure mechanisms fail

Looks to be a 7 Professional problem (for me anyway.) 3 x Pro BSD. 4 x Home Premium are fine no problems at all. Windows 8.1 pro is fine. Vista Home pre is fine. No harm done but pissed off I had to restore 3 PCs to an earlier point.

    Off to bed now.
