Tethering with Three

    Hi

Im looking to cut costs in my monthly budget - ive a three broadband and three handset - i was thinking of using the internet from my handset to replace the three broadband connection as a cost saving measure?

I see that their T&C say tethering isnt allowed or their sim cant be used in a router/dongle - how strict are they with that? Is it an option?

    Any insights would be invaluable

I'm on prepay and I tether my connection all the time. Last month I used 48Gbs with no extra charges or anything.

Would you be a high usage user consistantly may I ask?

How could Three tell if youre tethering? High usage?

Maybe but it would have to be something mad - they might not be able to detect you tethering since they are not technically allowed to use packet sniffers - but if you use your sim in a router or a dongle for example - they can tell since they can see what device you are connected with to their network

I have Regional Broadband unlimited home broadband at 28euro. It is very inconsistent and drops a lot breaking the connection to netflix and xbox live etc. My Three all-you-can-eat prepay phone signal is twice as fast according to speedtest.net. I have always contemplated cancelling the home broadband and just wirelessly tethering to my phone which works as well for netflix and xbox. Especially when 4g hits my area?
    Three Rep, what's the story??

I'm pretty sure Three don't allow tethering on prepay. You can still do it and most likely won't get caught but Three aren't going to give you the OK to tether.

Their terms and conditions are clear on this - no tethering allowed.

That being said - you could get away with it and many people have including myself but there is no guarantee of quality or support when it comes to issues plus they can as a last resort bar your account but ive never heard any of them do that.

4g on three is quite good as well - I use my three phone sim in a 4g router

with the current router b593 - im limited to 3ireland.ie

Note that 3internet APN is only for broadband services so it may not work with a phone sim

3internet APN does work with voice sims, it also works with the three branded B593s-22 with the latest frimware.

I have that router and 3internet APN does not work for me while it does work in older routers like the b693.

As for 3internet - it my or may not work with a phone sim, that cannot be guaranteed since that APN is designated for broadband customers by three. 3ireland will always work with it - that much you can be guaranteed.

...you are issued a private IP behind NAT as Three now seem to issue public IP's on an account basis only. Therefore, I wouldn't expect you could ever be issued a public IP on a handset/voice account, nor would I like to ask them for one either... it could raise suspicion!

Interesting to see that they have gotten rid of their public IP for anyone. It used to be the case that when you used the 3internet APN - you used to get a public IP address. Shame to hear that that is now gone :(

Indeed - I wonder when IPv6 will be made active on three. I know that UPC are already beginning to activate that protocol on their service.

Last time I added then all up three still had at least 60K of IP addresses and I probably don't have a list of all the ranges plus they now have a good few from O2.

Shouldn't have any problems with this dave i did this for years using an all you can eat phone sim in a modem before i got eircom DSL in. I also know someone who used well into 200GB a month for years too and nothing was ever done about it i honestly don't think 3 will do anything about it especially if you don't use too much data .

    :P

I know 200GB was a lot alright !! I wouldn't come close to that myself on our DSL 5 of us use around 300GB a month kids watch alot of YouTube videos too. My 4G on my phone is way faster than my DSL which is around 14Mb/s sometimes goes a small bit higher.

It's crazy that Three allow people to use a lot of data it does say just over 2TB when you check your free data allowance on my 3 though ! Didn't know they allowed tethering in the UK don't think Three ireland have ever stopped anyone from using over 15GB though.

I was with Vodafone for DSL before was really bad connection most the time have eircom now solid connection strangly as they all use the same lines etc.
