If you are based in Ireland, there are no direct flights to Santorini. Your options are to fly to Crete, and then get a ferry from Heraklion, or else fly to the UK(for example), and then get a direct flight to Santorini. Ryanair AFAIK are flying to Chania(Crete), from Dublin, up to October.

There are no direct flights from Dublin to Athens after mid-September, so I'd say going via the UK would be your best bet. If you are thinking of island-hopping, be aware that storms can delay your ferries by 24 hours or more so leave plenty of time for your airport connection home. At that time of the year the weather should still be warm but the season will be coming to a close. You'll have your pick of accommodation, but your main problem would be getting there and home from Ireland.

Crete is lovely, especially the west and south of the island - away from package holiday-land in the eastern half. Try Chania, Loutro and Paleochora.

In Santorini if you stay on the east of the island it's cheaper because it's less scenia - Kamari and Perissa are the two main beach resorts. The beaches are very stony and not like the sandy beaches you see on postcards. If you want to go more upmarket then Oia is the main town stay in - ridiculously picturesque and should be lovely in October. It is VERY expensive though - we stayed in www.delfinihotel.net - good value, if basic, with fantastic views.

Paros isn't too far away from Santorini - about 90 minutes by ferry. Lovely beaches and nice white-washed villages. Naoussa is a good spot - we stayed here, which was lovely and the lady who owned it was so nice - http://katerinamare.com/home/index.php/en/

Hope this helps to get you started. The Europe message board on the Fodors website is usually a good resource for tourist tips - give it a go -

Myself and my boyfriend are going to Crete in October! For 10 nights. Flying into Chania (got Ryanair flights while they were still relatively cheap). Staying in Chania for most of the time, then getting the ferry from Heraklion to Santorini for 3 nights. Then back to Crete to fly home. Fingers crossed the seas won't be rough.
