NCT Need a New Front Right Shock VW Golf GT '07

Recently got my car NCT'd and I need to get a new shock on the front driver side.

Just wondering if anyone's had there's changed recently - did you buy the part yourself (Mick's garage etc) and fit it or did you bring it to a local mechanic?

If so how much was the shock and which one did you pick? (There's a ton of them listed and not too sure which is appropriate).
If you brought to a mechanic how much can you expect to pay and any advice on a good (honest:) mechanic in Dublin city that could do the job without cutting my arm off in return?!

Any advice greatly appreciated (and apols Mod, I think I got the right forum but got a bit confused with the rules so hopefully got the right one!).

Buy in pairs, its the only to ensure both sides are the same. You can buy from Micks Garage and get an Indy mechanic to fit them. Prices vary greatly so its hard to tell you. For example 2 rear shocks for my car are around €350 but other cars they can be as cheap as €80.

I got two used rear shocks for my car from traynors dismantlers up the north for €30, they were €300 new, got them fitted for €50.

    Best to replace in pairs

Second hand parts such as suspension bits can be bit of a false economy, you could end up replacing them again not long after fitting them.

as has been said by Chris above replace both at the same time. You can try local motor factors as well, they might be just as good on price and more convenient if you have to return the parts if wrong.

What engine and spec model is the Golf?

    It's a 1.4GT two-door bought new in '07

The ironic bit is, had they both been Fcuked it would have passed. The NCT measures imbalance not the quality of each shock
