    Folks,

My brother in law failed English in the Leaving Cert.
Does this mean that he cannot get his college place (even if he has enough points)?

Check the course requirements for the specific course ... it should be on their website.

    http://www.gmit.ie/apply/cao-application-guidelines
    Entry Requirements

    A. Higher Certificates (Level 6) and Bachelor Degrees (Level 7)
The minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement for all higher certificates (Level 6) and ab initio bachelor degrees (Level 7) programmes is pass (Grade D3 or better) in five Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish with a minimum of 140 points.

    B. Honours Bachelor Degrees (Level 8)
The general minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement is a pass (grade D3 or better) in six Leaving Certificate subjects including English or Irish and Mathematics, two of which must be passed in higher level papers at Grade C3 or higher.

The programmes listed below carry additional/different requirements:

    ....

    PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science, GA785:
A science subject and an Ordinary C3 in Mathematics

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in General Nursing, GA880 and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychiatric Nursing, GA882:
A laboratory science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics and Chemistry (joint), or Agricultural Science.)

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Design & Technology Education, GA980:
Higher C3 in Design and Communication Graphics or Architectural Technology

Bachelor of Arts in Art & Design, GA270:
Pass in five Leaving Certificate subjects.
Foundation Level Mathematics at B2 minimum is accepted as one of the five.
    Pass in Portfolio assessment.

    ....

    J. Foundation Level Irish
Foundation Level Irish, at minimum B3 level, meets the minimum language requirement for entry to all programmes with the exception of nursing.
So, in short, if he's going for a Higher Cert or an ordinary degree, he needs to have passed five subjects, including Maths and Irish. A B3 or better in Foundation Irish is counted as a "pass".

If he's going for an Honours Degree, he needs to have passed six subjects, and he has to have done honours Maths and Irish, *and* got at least a C3 in both.

That's the basic requirement, as you can see, some courses have slightly specific requirements.

Note that you can typically progress from an ordinary degree to an honours degree if your mark is good enough, the minimum CAO requirements are no longer relevant.

Seamus, I think the "two of which" actually refers to the 6 subjects overall rather than the core three. It's a bit unclear though.

    For GMIT entry requirements.

Any level 8 degree requires 6 subjects, any two of which are at honours level (Hc3) the other 4 at minimum of pass level (OD3)
The 6 subjects must include Maths and EITHER English or Irish. These do not have to be the honours subjects.

So your brother in law will still meet institution entry requirements if he passed Irish at at least ordinary level

There may be further requirement at the course level

Institutes of Technology accept a pass in English or Irish along with the other course requirements.

If he has passed Irish, got enough points, and has the other course requirements he should be fine.

It does. Not the most wonderful wording, but they're trying to keep it brief I suppose.
