I have tried a load of fixings today but cannot get fixing on the wall. Tried long screws rawplugs - screwfix that hang onto the inside of plaster board- with thickness of the plasterboard then another gap I have drilled into the block but then raw plug goes way in and will not hold screw securely- I just want to know is there timber batons running behind plaster board and where will I find them I presume there is one either side of the window \is there batons running along the top over the window? Is prodding along with a bradaul to find the baton the only way to find them

It sounds like you have plasterboard dot and dabbed onto solid wall, there should be no issue why the plug and screw don't work, did you try using a longer screw to compensate for the thickness of slab and gap?

Yes long screw but by the time I drilled the hole for the raw plug there is at least an inch of a gap to raw plug head from fitting and screw and raw plug spins as I tighten to fix

Are you using plugs that came with curtain pole or what type?

Go and get yourself some frame fixers in your local diy centre.

Paddy, measure the depth from inner side of plasterboard to block work will ya? Just drill a hole in a sound part of the wall and insert a thin screwdriver. Mark depth, and measure, and report back.

Sounds like plasterboard is battoned to me - I usually make an educated guess as to where the batons are (usually by knocking or sometimes you might be able o see the seem or popped nails in platerboard) and then use the smallest drill bit i have to confirm there's wood behing the plasterboard.

For hanging curtain polls I usually dont bother with an outer baton. Where possible i put the cortain poll bracket straight into the platerboard baton with a screw (theres usually one close to the edge of the window). If thats not possible i use metal plasterboard fixings - theyve a good wide track and would take a lot to pull out of the plasterboard.

But it depends on the application and the sort of use they get, kids swinging out of them etc.

Edit: Just saw the pics - for that size window id just go straight into the plaster with metal fixings - However you may have weekened the platerboard with your earlier efforts at this stage.

And on the spinning rawl plugs - I had this problem before and realised the drill bit i was using was the correct size, but it was ever so slightly bent.
