Hello everyone. I have a small question. I did a course in PLC. I want to do another one now. In my previous course there was Communications and Computer Programming. I passed communications but failed Computer Programming. Now this new course has both modules as well. Can I just skip Communications but do Computer Programming and if I pass computer programming I add it to my previous certificate?

You can, the college will probably allow it. However, I would advise against it for two reasons:
    1. Many third level colleges state that you have to complete all your FETAC modules in the one sitting.
    2. If you only passed Communications, surely by repeating it, you will do better this time and it'll be very easy. You may even be able to 'recycle' some of the work, depending on where you did it before.

It really depends when you completed the Communications module and if it is the same award code for the Communications module you need for the new course. Talk to the FETAC Co-ordinator in your PLC college.

Most colleges will allow you to carry it forward but if you are using your FETAC award for progression to an Institute of Technology or University then you may have to complete all modules in one sitting.

My friend did a Communications module in the 2012-2013 college year, and had to redo it on the course we did last year (2013-2014), because the way FETAC is awarded changed (They were replaced by the Common Awards System). If you did it this year (2013-2014) then you could carry it onto the coming year etc.

To sum up, if it was completed prior to 2014 then it isn't eligible to be carried forward. If it was completed in 2014 then it is eligible to be carried forward.

Learners may carry forward existing minor awards (components) as exemptions towards new common major and special purpose awards, where they are appropriate, until December 2015. So your friend could have carried the Communications module but would not have been able to get any points from it and if he/she wanted to use their course to progress to a Level 7/8 then they may have to had completed all modules in one sitting.
