School Book Club

Does anyone have any experience of setting up a book club in their school? Or have one that's been operating well?

I want to set one up this year. I think I'll be able to get the numbers and want it to be led by a TY student, but I think funding might be an issue. We're DEIS and have a free book scheme, so asking students to buy a book each month probably won't be feasible. Anyone have any suggestions about financing? Or anything to do with book clubs that's worked well in your school?

We had a JCSP library in the school and had book clubs for both staff and students. Could you make an arrangement with a local school that has a JCSP library?

We have a JCSP library. A really lovely one actually. But there's no more than two copies of each book. How did it work for ye? Did ye have enough copies of each book to go around or just assign a book to a student for a week or so before it's passed on?

We used to do a book a month, but often it was two months. Some people were quicker readers and passed the books on to others. If it was a book we thought the kids would enjoy too, the librarian ordered maybe five or six copies for the library.
We were not mobbed with members for either the staff or student club, though the free sandwiches and biscuits pulled in a few.

Check with your local public library. Many of them offer block loans to facilitate this kind of thing.
