Intermittent MIL Light - Corolla

    Hi guys,
A few weeks ago I sat into my corolla to drive to work and the MIL light was on. Car seemed to be driving fine with no issues so I continued on the whole way to work.
Once lunch arrived I brought it for a spin but the MIL light was still on.
Then after work the MIL light was off and has been for the last few weeks.
Today, however the MIL light came back on at lunch and did not go away.
My mechanic done a diagnostic the last time with no faults found.
Any ideas what this could be?
    Car is a 2006 1.4 D4D Toyota Corolla with 1ND-TV engine.
Oil and Filters changed approx 2k km ago by myself.

So diagnostics couldnt find any issue when the light was on?

My 2001 corolla 1.4 petrol done the same thing and it turned out to be a Lambda sensor that was gone but the diagnostics couldnt pick it up for some reason in 3 garages.

    But I did service it.

No the light was gone off when I brought it. Was hoping it would be in the history that time but nope.

If the light was on for any period it stores a code in the history no matter what, I've never found one not to... Only way to remove it from history is a battery disconnect or clearing the system with tester . Maybe their equipment isn't picking it up or they are fobbing you off,

Battery wasn't disconnected and definitely not being fobbed off as my family have being going to this mechanic for years.
Dodgy equipment is a possibility though.
Should I try a main dealer and how much would that set me back?

Average plug in price is 50 yoyo but most places don't charge if you buy part there and they fit it, what area are you in?

Galway during the week and Sligo on weekends.
Don't have time to do it in Galway so a visit to Davey motors in Sligo may be in order

    ^^ This! ^^

Decent code readers are able to display freeze frame data and previous fault codes - both would be helpful to find out what's the problem with. :)

Sweet, If I get time to get it checked I'll let ye know.
Just remember there that my mechanic said the egr valves sometimes stick and that could be it.
He reckons its nothing serious anyways since the MIL turns itself off.

I know an accurate answer can't be given without a diagnostic but do ye think its something serious or not?

    :)

Plenty of the ones from the list below can turn MIL on, and off after a time, I'd say:

I had it on a Ford mondeo turned out to be EGR valve cleaned it and hey presto brand new

They advise blocking it on a ford owners club but cleaning it did the same job

You're the second person to suggest this to me.
Would there be much to removing and cleaning it?
    How long would it take?
    Thanks
