Yep, am in the same boat! Id love a summer not spend job hunting but alas it has eluded me

I'm in the same boat. This is my first summer of applying for jobs throughout as last year I had secured the continued position in a maternity leave I had begun before the summer.

I'm starting to get anxious as all summer I've only had one interview (unsuccessful, but to be honest I was chancing my arm applying for the job and was surprised to be called to interview.

I've applied for 40+ jobs and know for definite that I have not been shortlisted for 6... complete silence from the rest.

    Is this typical?

Yes this is extremely typical. Its all about luck really. Such an oversupply of teachers at the moment. Theres still time though.....

Oh ok thanks... I'm new to this and have been feeling more and more like some sort of unemployable failure as each week passes...

Another question for you... when is time up? I mean realistically when are you not likely to get a job for the year (excluding maternity, sick leave etc) I ask as I am getting married next year so I cant afford to risk casual subbing for the year I need to look into other jobs if teaching doesn't pan out.

Time is never up. I would send my cv to as many schools as you possibly can around the widest radius you are willing to travel. This has worked for me in the past. I am in the lucky position where I don't have to worry about this anymore as I am due a CID this year, but I know the feeling.

Also over those years, I often got a job in the last week before school starts and when in a job jot calls about maternity leaves from schools I had put my CVs into.

Don't give up you still have loads of time.

Ive found that interviews can run into first few weeks in september. The vecs are often the latest with interviews. Id say if you're still looking by end of september then chances of getting something are pretty slim. Obviously maternity and sick leaves pop up throughout the year. Ive been called to two interviews in the last 24hrs. A lot of jobs that i saw advertised had closing dates this week. Also more jobs will be advertised in next few weeks with principals being back in school for the results

I got one job on 1st September, I got another 4 weeks into the school year

I'm also in the same boat. Had a number of interviews but as I have only been able to secure a small number of hours since I graduated two years ago any response I have received stated that I didn't have enough experience. It's tough because it's like a viscous circle.

The one thing I will say is that being called to interviews has allowed me to hone my interview skills, that is something I guess

Im one year away from a CID and it looks like there won't be any work for me in my VEC. Gut wrenching

I would definitely agree with those who've said time is never up. It's not at all unusual for a teacher to start a week or two after the start of term and you never know if someone will get sick or something.

If you are that worried though, I'd still say leave it until term has started at least before you commit to any other jobs (unless you don't care what you're doing either way).

I got my job in mid september, on the same day got phonecall from vec asking when I could start!

I think some teachers might be accepting a few positions and still mulling over contracts.

    Best of luck anyway folks.

I know that in the past we have regularly gone back to school and had one or two jobs not filled...principal informed us that he was interviewing for them during that week...so its definitely not too late yet !! Good luck all

We're interviewing tomorrow and Friday for jobs. These could create vacancies in other schools if teachers move.

    its not over yet!

just found out today we will have a sick leave too so will have to sort that too next week.

Contracts go back to the Dept. by the start of October afaik. So possible to get your own hours until then. After that it's maternity leave, sick leave etc. Good luck with the search! It can turn around in a day or so at this time of year!

I know there are jobs advertised in my ETB and the closing date is only today, so god knows when the interviews will be. Ideally they will have people in place before school starts, but it might run late.
