Thank God for the internet! Fuel cap opening button didnt work (probably fuse?) no petrol. Googled problem and was told to look for lever inside the boot which worked! It is Passat, I presume there is lever for that in every car.

Ones that have electric opening usually have an override alright. Some easier to get to than others,

Yeah, I was lucky, hopefully it is just the fuse!

On the vw's its usually the solenoid for popping the cap that fails. Try the fuse by all means first, if that doesnt fix it then you'll find that buried in the boot near the cap too

Not sure if it's related, but i had the same issue in my mk4 golf.

Can you hear any noise at all when you press the button?

On mine there was a small squeek from it.

took the solonoid out, greased up the gears, and got a new latch arm for it (not sure what it's called tbh, the bit that opens the door) and away she went.

absolute fecker to get to, you need midget hands and a lot of patience.

Thanks for that. Ill give it a shot if the fuse doesnt do the job.

Thanks everyone. Got it working, it seems that when I got to the inside of the boot beside the petrol flap the cable connection was loose and now its fine, cheers again.
