Slow download speeds not UPC's fault !

This is driving me nuts :(. I had been getting speedtest download results of around 4 or 5Mbps (both wireless and with lan cable attached) for the last week or so on my 120mbps UPC account. This is on my 1 month old Thinkpad.

I complained to UPC , who said everything looks ok on their end. So I dug out an old asus aspire netbook and low and behold, 40mbps.
I have checked the drivers on the Thinkpad's realtek gbe controller and broadcom wireless adapter and both are up to date.
Is this a windows 8.1 problem? if so does anyone know how to resolve it?

Solved. Its a problem with the broadcom and realtek drivers for 8.1
I removed them and reinstalled the older windows 8 drivers. Everything is back to normal now.
Hope this helps someone else out a little. :)

Thanks fore the update. My UPC is pretty inconsistent, on different machines. I might check out the drivers now. Never thought of that.

Not with UPC but have a HP laptop, Sony Vaio and a Alienware

Sony Vaio and Alienware just under 3mb Windows 7 wifi and ethernet

HP laptop 1.7mb wifi and ethernet. 8.1

It took me several attempts at reinstalling drivers, mixing and matching 8.1 drivers with 8.0 drivers and windows 7 drivers before I finally solved the problem.
It was a total head melt. I'll be waiting for at least a year for windows 9 to sort its problems before I update again.

Generic Windows update drivers seems to have sorted it.

It was neither UPC's fault (yay for getting me over 200mbps most of the time) nor Microsoft's fault. If you want to blame someone, blame the makers of your network devices who seem incapable of keeping up with progress in operating systems.

Windows 9 here I come, bring it on. Tomorrow 3 weeks and I'll have it on my main system!
