What is the most cost effective gas fire available?

Now I know they are the not the most efficient way of heating a room but there is not an option at the moment to change heating type so present fire has to be replaced and I need to know what options are out there. There does not seem to be much choice.

Present fire is closed in standalone type thing with control in a dial down low, I can get similar again but the controls are a problem as the person using it is unable to bend down sufficiently to turn it on. Ideally I would like one with top control or even better a remote control. Have been suggested an open style fire but I thought these ones were the most expensive to run, bear in mind this fire will be on a LOT and actual heat from it is needed.

Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated.

By the way it's gas tank in place, not natural gas.

GAs fires at not intended to be a primary heat source

You can get many types that are remote control, is it in a fireplace opening etc? a picture of whats there presently would help diagnose

I can't get a pic at the moment as I won't be visiting again for a while but it is the same one as in this link, much same set up too, placed against blocked up fireplace opening which obviously would have to be opened again for the open fire style.

While I know they are not intended as the main source unfortunately that is the way it is in the house and has been for many years, the old one was used daily for hours in winter, there is partial gas central heating as background heat but very few radiators and not sufficient heat due to very old house, poor insulation, draughts etc, more to deter damp than to heat. There is no funds to go updating any of that stuff so a replacement of the fire is the only present solution.

The old setup has worked fine over the years, the room it needs to heat is smallish and the cost was manageable but don't want to increase the cost if possible hence slow to go with open gas fire based if it is not as efficient as the existing type.
