[Wanted] Accomodation availability after leaving cert results

I'm just wondering if anyone with experience of renting in Dublin can tell me how easy it is to find a suitable house in the next few weeks.

I'm a second year trinity student looking for a house near trinity with 2-3 other lads.

We were concerned about getting a house before the leaving cert results and offers come out, but unfortunately due to work commitments, not being happy with houses and being unlucky in not being offered one we expressed interest in.

I'm starting to worry a bit that we won't find one that we'll be happy with and that wewill be lucky enough to get with the increased demand from new first years. I was planning on going up today but virtually nothing came online that was suitable.

Also, are landlords holding off putting houses up because leases are just finishing and there waiting for the leaving results to come out to charge a bit more? Because it would make it easier if more houses startef to come online in the next few weeks.

    Thanks!

I hope that you might have come across a few houses already since the results are up. But in case your not:

Have you set up a daft.ie alert? If you have then great, be sure to be on the ball when a house goes up and you like the look of it. Ring the landlord immediately and hopefully you'll get there first. Mostly (if not always) the landlord lets all callers come and view the house, but being the first caller is a huge help.

If your picking on the small things on house, you can always get the landlord onto it. If you've dismissed some houses based on location then that's understandable. Student houses aren't anything spectacular, but they're decent if you have an eye for a good house.

Houses should keep coming over the coming weeks with landlord's moving out students/interns who were up in Dublin for the summer.

I don't know if landlord's actually increase the price and there's no doubt there's sneaky ones out there. But based on the market you might be paying a slightly higher price than someone might be in DCU because you'll be closer to the city.

Thanks, I've set up a daft alert, there are very few places coming up that would take students and would be an acceptable distance from the college.

I've seen a few, close to getting one but there is still uncertainty.

It's funny because you think the hard part is finding a place that suits, and then you realise how much demand there is for it and that you have a slim chance of getting it!

If at all possible just make sure you're the first caller when you phone the landlord. There's people out there who don't care where they end up as long as they have a house.

In that case what I'd do if a house pops up in the area that's ideal for you, ring the landlord straight away. Give him your name and go to the viewing. If you like the house, go up and speak to the landlord, just for a chat. He'll know that you were the first to call. If he thinks your a good bunch of lads he'll most likely ring you saying ye secured the house.

That's all I can say for the moment. Digs isn't a bad last resort, but it's usually always available. But not many people want digs and I take it you don't want to either.
