A new study by Harvard School of Public Health indicates that there can be as much as a 10% extra risk in developing aggressive prostate cancer as a result of getting a vasectomy...

How would people rate this study ?

In this study, 16 out of every 1,000 men developed lethal prostate cancer over 24 years of follow-up. Thus, the result that vasectomy was linked to a 20% raised risk of lethal prostate cancer, is relative to that 16 out of 1,000.

Therefore, as the researchers point out, although the 20% was found to be statistically significant (that is unlikely due to chance), its effect is a relatively small increase in the absolute risk of developing prostate cancer.

So the risk has increased by .32% from 1.6% to 1.92%. I think I can live with that.

    Condoms for the win.

Men and women sterilizing themselves. Why? Whats the point? You have to use condoms anyway for protection!

I suppose its better insurance against an unwanted pregnancy than contraception. If you're in a long term relationship its great to be able to have sex without having to scramble for a condom.

Or feel like you're taking a bath with your socks on.

So no one would be concerned about this study results?

Would it put you off having a vasectomy ?

Certain women are prone to potentially lethal conditions when they become pregnant. Therefore, it is recommended that such women do not become pregnant. If the husband/male partner has a vasectomy, the chances of pregnancy (and death) is lowered. Of course, the woman could opt for tubal ligation, but the vasectomy is a less serious surgical procedure.

If you are researching a vasectomy to the point of finding a small study that may show a very very small increase in risk then maybe having a vasectomy is no for you.
