Usually you give a months notice with Setanta if you take out the channels for 12 months.

I was surprised to find out that my subscription had automatically renewed - its a well hidden term and condition.....

Just had the same problem, rang up explained my case, but he was having none of it. I was hoping for a full refund but would have understood if they charged me a months subscription as "30 days notice is needed for cancellation".

He informed me there is no refund on annual subscriptions and the best he could do is cancel auto renewal for next year but I had paid for the year and that was that .

I told him cancel auto renewal and to switch off all the channels with immediate effect. After asking me about 7/8 times "do you realise you have paid for a years viewing and want me to switch off the service today and that you're not entitled to refund" to which i kept replying YES. He tells me he must consult a manager before going ahead with my request.

Money is tight lately and 225 euros (years sub plus multi room) is a lot of money to me, if/when I get on my feet again, BT, Setanta etc. can go whistle if they think I'll be subscribing again.

I'd keep the channels for the year - but ask for written confirmation by email that next years has been cancelled ..

Also calls might be recorded so if you cann find out when you rang them last year you should be able to get a copy of the call under freedom of information

I would make a written official complaint and point out that the auto renewal was never pointed out in the original request. They can check their phone records.

Not advising you of auto renewal is fraud. You are legally obliged to be given the opportunity to cancel.

Get on to the financial ombudsman as well and your card company. just imagine if you had forked out 5000 euros. Setanta are hoping for 200 you will let it lie, don't.

In fairness, it's my own fault for not ringing to cancel the auto renewal. I genuinely expected to wake up one day and see that the channels were cut off. When I realised I had been charged for another year, I didn't panic and was fully expecting a full refund or at WORST to be charged for one months viewing. Not the tough **** attitude I got from them.
Anyway just checked and they still haven't cut my channels, as per my request, either way I want nothing more to do with Setanta Sports, it's unfortunate that BT decided to join up with that shower of baboons.
Coincidentally, I also had dealings with Sky and NFL GamePass re: subscriptions and the difference in attitude from these two as opposed to ****anta was night and day.

P.S. If I have to ring them tomorrow about cutting the channels, I might go about getting a refund for the price of the phone call and time wasted....:)

Well, as requested, they cut my channels. :):):) thats all folks.

Apologies to Daniel1994 for hijacking the thread. Hope you get your money refunded because you seem to have a legitimate case for a refund, as was said earlier keep after them and don't let it lie. Best of luck.

You demanded that the channels are turned off even though you won't be getting a refund?

I have a yearly sub aswell which is up for renewal early October. So on the back of this thread I cancelled renewal a minute ago just in case. I looked for the €9.99 monthly deal but all I got offered was €21.99. So I said no.

rang them up they said the listened to phone call had me on record as saying i did not want renewel next year but because it happened on the same phone call i ordered the channel on i have no case according to them, no refund

    Yes

They never mention the fact the subscribtion is automatic renewal.
I presumed mine had been canceled when they went bust a few years ago - but low and behold sepetember I was charged again - they never even sent me a renewal notification/receipt - which is possibly something you could take up with the tax man!

I'll never have anything to do with that shower again!

I would have subscribed to BT sport only for the fact it's through Setanta!!!

You should try contacting your debit/credit card provider and look for a chargeback.

yes don't give up, ask them for a transcript of the telephone call. When you do auto renewal its usually an online function like say for an antivrus package but they have a box where you can untick auto renewal. How can you untick a telephone conversation. I would say what setanta have done is illegal and if you play hardball you will get your money back. And you should have been advised about the auto renewal before money was taken. Thats your main avenue to getting your money back.

Find out the email of the CEO and mail him, the guy on the phone obviously gets commission by retaining you so not in his interest to cancel.

Just checked my online banking and there was charge from Setanta for another €162.15..

Rang them up and apparently because I cancelled my main box the second multi room box becomes the main subscription and therefore is liable for the full subscription charge.

I know for a fact I mentioned, 3 or 4 times during the original call, it was a multi room subscription and even offered to give him the second viewing card number. He claimed the second box was never mentioned in the phone call. Even if the fact it was a multi room sub was never mentioned surely he would have had that information on his screen. He has told me that the €162.15 will be refunded to me, but they are gone off to "review the phone call" and will get back to me within 48 hours. I asked if i could be still liable for the €162.15 charge and he repeated "we are going to listen to the call again".

That was quick... while writing this post I got my call back from them, which goes like this.

"Hi this is ???Sally??? from Setanta sports administration department, I'm ringing to inform you that you will be refunded €162.15, and your account will be reactivated"

I asked her was this my call back which I wasn't expecting till Monday or Tuesday, she said yes that is it and as far as they're concerned matter is closed.
So obviously they listened to the call and realised the multi room sub was mentioned.

I also confirmed that my auto renewal is cancelled for next year, hopefully thats the last of my dealings with Setanta Sports.

If they didn't state during your initial phonecall that you would have to ring again to cancel then i'd say you definitely have a case. They did state that your request is recorded.

It may be worthwhile researching the new sepa bank system. I think the regulations allow a payee to reverse the action more easily when there is a dispute. I could be wrong but worth checking out.
