I wanted to measure out some routes I do so over the weekend jogged sandymount to Deerpark and back using the viewranger app on my phone, its basically either a flat or mild gradient. So the stats were 11.1 km , max height 117m (seems reasonable) min height 53m (dodgy as I ran along the seafront) , height gains 913m ??? this is the one that I need to now what it means, it seems excessive relative to the absolute height gain. Is it worth keeping track of for effort or just stick to absolute height gain?
Also another stat was Real Lenght 11.4km, im guessing its just a way of giving credit for the ~100m height gain?

Way too much height gain. By comparison, a recent 27km loop from Crone over the Tonduffs, War hill, Djouce and Maulin had 1150m gain.

What base map were you using? Have you downloaded the altitude data or was it just using the data from your GPS receiver?

I thought so, Ill just use the max height to give me an idea. Just using one of the free maps Open Cycle maps I think and just using the GPS function.

Ah yeah, those maps don't have altitude data, so it's just using whatever the GPS received in your phone is telling it. Still a bit surprising it's so far out though.

You can download Ireland altitude free, that might improve things in future.
